Hello everyone,

I am currently not looking for any dedicated server but in need of some information for myself :D

How much difference in terms of cost if I would like to BUY a server from a host and colocate the server at the host's NOC?

Is it more worth or it is better to get a delicated server instead of buying a server in terms of one year, two years or three years?

Thanks in advance :D

Cheers!

I strongly feel that you should start off by renting a dedicated server to get a feel for your own server. Later on, after you are very comfortable with toubleshooting and problem solving, it's okay to explore ownership/collocation options (and even then you're probably still better off with a rented dedicated, depending on your situation). I believe this is especially important for you because you're currently a reseller. Getting a dedicated is a big step--but an important one if you're serious about getting in to web hosting full time.

One thing to keep in mind...
You may find managed dedicated servers, but once you move to co-location you will probably be charged by the hour for tech support and admin work. So...make sure you really know what you are doing before you make that move. Also, inquire with hosts...some may work out a deal where you can buy the server outright, but still plug it in as a managed dedicated server...kind of like a co-lo/dedicated mix...

Thanks and I won't jump right in if I am not ready... probably take several years for me to learn the basic.

Many thanks for you two... :D

Agree. Some of the hosts here offer smokin' deals on leased servers coupled with a decent amount of bandwidth/transfer and in some cases, you will pay more for less when it comes to colocation (especially if you just have one box). When you get into renting racks and lines, then it is a whole different ball game, but for one server, I'd say look into leasing first.

Another factor is usage, but you really can't judge that at the moment. There are some good colo deals as well, so ya' just gotta weigh a few things, like do you want to spend $1,500 up front, then ship the server you own somewhere, and pay for straight transfer or line bandwidth?

Thanks Chicken :)

I will have to start learning the basic. Any idiot guide regarding managing a server? Any books or sites that help for a beginner like me? I know that there are too many things to be learned but is there any easy guides, sites or books that really helps? I don't want to have information overloaded though :D

Again, thanks.
