View Full Version : Which domain registrar is good?
Mysterio 11-02-2001, 04:36 PM as the subject says...
I'm looking for a good domain registrar with a reasonable fee. I was looking at 123-reg.co.uk, they have good prices there. But then I saw "IPS tag" I was wondering what IPS tag is. Could someone enlighten me on what it is?
Anyway, pls help w/ the domain registrar. Good and reasonable fees pls. I'm pretty new into webhosting stuff, pls be gentle. Thanks
I've used GoDaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com) in the past and they were good for me. Good prices and support.
Mysterio 11-02-2001, 05:05 PM One more thing. What happens if say, a domain registrar go bankrupt or something? Where am I going to control my domain preferences, etc later?
Rewdog 11-02-2001, 05:29 PM They would most likely send an email out to the customers asking you to transfer registrars. Also, the topic of who's the best domain registrar has come up constantly, use the search button at the top for more info.

If the registrar is OpenSRS based you have nothing to worry about. They have a system in place that concerns this worry. Visit http://www.opensrs.org/ for more info. A good OpenSRS reseller I haved used in the past is 000domains.com
Mysterio 11-03-2001, 03:29 AM Actually, what kind of features should I be looking for?
Martie 11-03-2001, 03:49 AM I always recommend http://www.000domains.com
to clients who wish to register their own domain.
Its 13.50 per year for registering, and it comes with a very easy interface which allows you to log in and make changes, and manage your domain very easily.
mahinder 11-03-2001, 05:38 AM godaddy have very good pricing. also there manage domain interface is good.
{NIRMANI} 11-03-2001, 06:41 AM I have tendency towards stargateinc.com though sometimes they seem to be too slow. but overall I am happy with their featured services which you have to pay if you use godaddy.
If you are looking for relaible registrar, I recommend www.gandi.net though they charge extra few bucks more. They have been very professional for me.
The advantage with opensrs.net reseller is you have the luxary of managing your data at manage.opensrs.net eventhough the reseller site is down.
CrazyHostGuy 11-03-2001, 07:47 AM Another good one to look at is GKG.NET. They have $10.00 domain names, and a very nice control panel.

yuffie123 11-03-2001, 09:11 AM Personally I have my domain managed by cedant.com... they are more expensive ($39.99 for 2 years) but the support is flawless, and after all I've been through (secured-net and Eagle Web) I don't mind paying extra for my domain.
Tetraboy 11-03-2001, 11:28 AM Personnaly I use dotster.com $15 per year.
RotoHost 11-03-2001, 02:56 PM We've used them all, but always go back to OpenSRS for ease of use and superior domain management.
In addition to www.000domains.com ($13.50 per year), we can recommend www.weblaunching.net ($12 per year).
Manish 11-03-2001, 03:21 PM My Recommendations:
www.gandi.net - ALWAYS heard good reviews about this one.
www.godaddy.com - Myself got domains from this one, and I am happy till now. sub $10.
www.registerfly.com - Lots of goodies and very good control panel. Includes URL Redirection, etc. in sub-$10 registration.
Magic 11-03-2001, 04:21 PM Dotdealers.com offer an amazing control panel for domain alterations... and the best thing is... your clients can never find out their domain was registered with dotdealers.com (as far as im aware)... so you can charge as much as you want :D
Registration is $9.90/year
Chicken 11-03-2001, 05:11 PM Well, dotdealers was registered at REGISTER.COM, INC. though I'm not sure it makes much difference. There isn't much you can do to truly hide the registrar, unless they are a reseller of a registrar and then you might not be able to tell.
Tiggy 11-03-2001, 08:41 PM Perhaps I can help you out here, seeing how no one else has addressed your IPS tag question ;)
An IPS tag (as far as I understand it) is used to identify which provider has control of the domain. I use 123-reg.co.uk myself and have transfered my tiggys.co.uk domain there recently so that all my domains are together. Before then my IPS tag was FASTHOSTS (as it was got through UK Reg), after the paperwork for the transfer was processed it changed to WEBFUSION (ie. 123 Reg).
Having had experience with 123-Reg I can recommend them, while they may not compete with some of the US registrars for .com, .org or .net, they are amongst the cheapest I have found for getting a .co.uk domain.

Zippy 11-03-2001, 08:46 PM I use GKG.net and I can't complain. Great service, great layout, and a great price. $9.99 :)
TheOp 11-03-2001, 10:39 PM I use stargateinc.com. I was also told they are available at stargate.com
8.85 per year, with multi-year discounts. On-line support with tracking numbers a plus.
2 or more domains for 8 bucks each with the DomainXpress service they have.
ClusterMania 11-04-2001, 05:33 AM I like Register.com They offer dns servers so everything is easy to setup.
{NIRMANI} 11-04-2001, 05:47 AM How much extra you have to pay just for that DNS servers? BTW, other registrars also give you the usage of their DNS for less.
ClusterMania 11-04-2001, 06:58 AM Register.com offer free dns servers. Thats what I like about them.
bitserve 11-04-2001, 08:07 AM I like Dotster, Inc. If you sign up for their affiliate program, you save more money.
We've used dotster ever since they've been in business and have a great relationsip with them.
Walter 11-04-2001, 09:20 AM I recommend to stay away from register.com.
Our last support issue with them lasted incredible 3 weeks until it got answered.
WesternMedia 11-04-2001, 12:03 PM NO one has mentioned BulkRegister yet. Sure, you gotta buy a membership, but then domains as low as $10, and the esaiest control panel i have seen. As a member, i can make changes like nothing!!!

Handy tip:
If you have a domain with register.com that you need to renew and you want to stay with them, initiate a transfer to another registrar and they'll offer to renew it for $12 for a year instead of the usual outrageous $35 ;)
BravoComm 11-04-2001, 08:08 PM I personally like DomainMonger.com. A bit more expensive than some ($17/yr) but I like them. I don't think their new site works in IE though (strange I know)... but I started with them well before the change.
I basically go there out of habit now. :)
Edgar Figaro 11-05-2001, 01:42 PM I registered my domain with Directnic.com,and I'm pretty happy with them so far.
Pretty cheap too.
I recommend them.
thomas1 11-05-2001, 02:07 PM I also recommend Gandi.net (http://www.gandi.net). Moved all my domains from Netsol to Gandi, they have proved to be very reliable.
