View Full Version : Proportional Design Idea
stripeyteapot 03-22-2004, 12:05 PM A lot of developers can create a flash site that fits perfect in all browsers, but know anyone who can do it in HTML, CSS, and Graphics? Have the site look the same in all borwsers and resolutions?
Today we released our bare ideas here (http://www.pmod.co.uk/propdesign.htm).
Am I right in thinking this is taking website design and development to another level?
Regards,
MG315 03-22-2004, 07:48 PM this would only work if there were no images on the website, which makes a site seem quite boring. also vector isnt supported by browsers...
alvinks 03-22-2004, 08:16 PM 4 degrees is saying they are going to create a new language, that browsers will need to know how to compile, and that language will have the ability to display vector images. Among a host of other things.
I was going to write a list of all the problems this has, but I do not want to hate on anyones ideas so I say go ahead and try to do it.
Adam Clement 03-22-2004, 09:18 PM That sounds really interesting. It's very difficult to get html layouts to fit well with all resolutions. I'm very interested to see what can happen with this. I'll be looking forward to what you can do.
Zopester 03-23-2004, 04:50 AM The idea will make all website designs fit full screen width. This includes all graphics, tables, fonts to fit by using proportional vector graphics. Coding this is not possible using plain html and / or CSS. This will require the use of other programming languages not to be mentioned at this point.
Yes it is possible. Just throw in a touch of SVG (that's Scalable Vector Graphics (http://www.w3c.org/Graphics/SVG/About) for the uninitiated) and away you go!
Of course, SVG isn't supported by the browser vendors yet (natively that is, but you can still download plugins (http://www.w3c.org/Graphics/SVG/SVG-Implementations.htm8#viewer)). When it's accepted, true proportional design becomes possible.
Not raining on your parade, but there really isn't a new idea left in the world
stripeyteapot 03-23-2004, 06:06 AM You may have misunderstood, the new language will be supported by browsers without the plugins, it will be built around current languages already supported by all browsers.
SVG isn't really necessary, niether is the new language we are building, but it would require a hell of a lot of Javascript. We are basically going to make this easier and more efficient for designers and developers.
Thank you for pointing out we are not the first though :)

They use XML, that's not plain HTML and / or CSS ....

Yup.

What I said. :)
stripeyteapot 03-23-2004, 09:18 AM Sorry I missed this post

To think this limits your mind, creativeness and any possibilities of taking design to another level, or advancing something that someone is having problems doing so.
alvinks 03-23-2004, 01:17 PM You may have misunderstood, the new language will be supported by browsers without the plugins, it will be built around current languages already supported by all browsers.
if the current browsers are not supporting SVG while will they invest a whole lot of time making your new language work with it? If you are really talking about a new language then the browsers will need to know how to compile it.
stripeyteapot 03-23-2004, 06:04 PM I would answer this, but I don't wish to give information out just yet. I can see where you're coming from and we have thought this through thoroughly.
