View Full Version : Long Distance Relationships
WildWayz 11-01-2001, 09:53 AM Hi ya :)
OK, confess - who here has had a long distance relationship that has worked?
I met my fiance 4 years ago last week online and have been with her since. She lives in Toronto, and I live in the UK.
I am trying to get the money together to marry her and move there or she can move here - still not finalised (she's an interior designer and due to the recession she is finding it hard to get a job as people are holding back re-doing their offices).
Sooo - anyone else with long distance relationship stories?

dektong 11-01-2001, 10:16 AM Me has a story too :)
Met my girlfriend about 7 years ago. Had a very long long distance relationship, not just England - Canada but to meet here I need to take a 30-35 hours (including stop overs) flight. The first 6 years, I only met her for 5 months total. Another thing, you should be glad that your pay much cheaper long distance call from England to Canada. I used to pay like $0.9/minute (with $3 surcharge), for the first 2 years, if I want to talk to her :) So I figured, if I worked hard in a dinning hall for 12 hours, I will have enough money to call her for one hour
She is now back home again (need a 30 hours flight to meet her) but we are getting married this coming December!
Anyway, good you can "survive" the long distance relationship, but Wwhen considering distance, charges on phone calls, etc ... I think my long ditance relationship is tougher than yours ;)
cheers,

Heehee :)
Nice story - and I really do believe that long distance relationships can work. I met Yolandé online, and we got to know each other by personality rather than looks.
Was a rough start tho - she told me she was 28 (I was 19 at the time). I flew there and she told me she wasn't 28 and that she was 35.
Was ok in the end =)

Ericwenlong 11-01-2001, 11:03 AM With the VOIP technology and Video Conferencing, you still can talk and see each other everyday, can't you?
WildWayz 11-01-2001, 11:11 AM She has 56k modem and I have ISDN - so the video/audio speeds are bad.
I call her twice a day every day :)
She scared me the other week though. She never told me she was going out of town, and I couldn't reach her or her mother - so I thought there might have been an accident.
She disappeared on the thursday and I left it until Tuesday when I called the police in Toronto :)
Turns out she went out of town and fell ill. She thought her mohter was gonan call me.

Oh well, this works already, but currently only with atoms.
It will take a long time until they will be able to do this with humans....

James, I am sure you love her no matter what! :)
Congrats for finding your love!
I have had a long distance relationship too... but the story is too long to tell and too personal... besides it doesn't work out well... not because we didn't love each other but more of other problems...
I wish I am as lucky as you guys :bawling:
Chicken 11-01-2001, 02:14 PM The wife and I exchanged emails before she flew here (from Korea), eventually moving here, and well.... the rest is history...

Haaa .. I rember those .. back in 95 I did the 'net-dating' scene .. got to travel to a coupel of states that I woudl have never visit otherwise .. it was fun
Met both of my wifes drunk at a party .. funn think, considering none of them was drunk too ..
I met my husband in a chat room... we chatted for about two years before the first voice call was made. Somewhere in the third year strange things began to happen..and phone bills became larger. He was about 2000 miles from me... In the fourth year we were living side by side and in the fourth/fifth year (1998) we opened FutureQuest together.. We've been sitting next to each other every day since....
Aloha
well
I was scoping the hot tub where I live (Maui) and noticed this cute girl so went down there started talking we hit it off so well we hung out for the rest of her vacation while she was here for a friends wedding.
we kept talking on the phone for a month and decided to buy her a round trip ticket out to Maui so she came out here 6 months later she had to go back to the mainland (Vancouver Canada) so I decided to pack up and go with to meet her family and we had to date for a while since she could only stay 6 months figured it was my turn to go to her place. So after 3 years we got married
(what a legal hassle) and now we are back home on Maui ;)
one thing I can say is guys should be just as willing to move to her place as she would to yours !!!!!!!
I hear to many friends say she wouldnt move with me
I am like well decide which one is better and why and if you have to move away
(I must say I was very homesick for Maui though)
Chicken how did you guys meet ???
and others replying to this that have long dist ????

Whoaaa maybe he put a spell on you :D :D
You are moving to US I am filling in your place in OZ (moving to Oz soon) :D
My wife is Australian, and I am From Toronto, Ont. Canada ( that big country above the USA! ). We met because my wife was working as a nanny in the US and she ended up going back to Australia after that. We ended up keeping along distance relationship over the net & phone for a year and half ( God was that hard!!!!!!!! But well worth it ). She ended up coming to Canada, but we ended up going back to Oz for 7 months because she became ill. 7 months later we went back to Canada stayed for another 6 months. And came back here :) Now I have applied for perm residence, wife is still sick ( GRRR, Its true that doctors are just practicing ), But I have started a business with my bro in law and everything is perfect. Not to mention my wife is my soulmate. It was well worth the long distance thing. We were truely meant to be together :)

Ericwenlong 11-05-2001, 03:23 AM Kiwi ..........Lovelie.......
MCHost-Marc 11-05-2001, 04:11 AM I've been there quite often about ...1-2 years ago? Yeah, before MSN closed down the IRC and switched to web-based chat  :D From what i remember, it was a nice chat room. Not at all related to the name, though ;)
Skeptical 11-05-2001, 06:54 AM Wow I had no idea so many of you have started relationships over the net! I'd always thought the online chatrooms were filled with gay men pretending to be women!

You forgot the child molesters, rapists and psychopaths. :)
Well, a fair few people already know I met my finacee' online too. About 5 years ago, and still together now, sharing a pretty little 2 year old. (in fact it must be getting close to 6 years now). We both originally 'escaped' online to get away from crazy people actually... We figured at least if one of us turned out to be a nutcase it would just be a matter of disconnecting to get rid of them. We met online shortly after I'd had the police around hauling off my previous girlfriend (long story).
We've been together ever since, and it's been the best relationship either of us had ever had. Contrary to the newspapers, a lot of couples do work out - as this thread shows :)
