Hello
I just visited serverrack.net and saw their dedicated RaQ server prices.
They have a dedicated RaQ3 with 65G/Month transfer for only $79. It seems amazing.
I currently resell hosting on normal PIII computers and I pay $4/G Transfer.
1- So what makes you avoid working on RaQ. Are people interested in these servers.
2- Does RaQ3 support MySQL and PHP?
3- I have heared that they are slow, Is it? Are they able to run message boards etc?
4- Exactly what things I must know about them before I considr starting a business on them instaed of normal servers?
Regards,
Mac

1. Overall, they get a bad rap but there are certainly advantages to them. They have a few annoying problems, logs being one of them, also updates that cause problems.
2. Yes
3. Message boards wouldn't be the best use for them. They'd handle lower end non resource intensive accounts better.
4. That you'll suffer some pain and probably hate them coming from a linux background. They have a purpose, but if you try to get fancy and do things it was never made to do, then it will bite you in the donkey and you'll be stomping yours into the ground.

Tell me Chicken (or anyone else :) : In your experience how much trouble/risk is someone taking by going a ded RAQ route, at say rackshack when they have no Linux experience?
I'm savvy in a Win2k envoironment. How steep/quick is the learning?
One important thing, get as much memory in it as possible if you want to run more then a few sites.
I have a RAQ3 with 384 mb ram and it suns fine for light sites.

If you've never used *nix for any purpose and you wanted a *nix box. RaQ would be good for holding your hand though the proccess of runing the server. But from a person that has alot of background, it's to friendly and the updates to it are very slow and can be sometimes harmful to your box if applied........

Dr Strangelove, pretty much what they said. Really, if you don't mind reading and searching things out, then you'll be ok. Pretty much most problems you'll encounter have been encountered before by other people, and you can find answers to questions somewhere (or ways to avoid the problem in the first place).
I emailed this to someone else, figure I'll post it here as well...

Thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated.
Thank you too.
It seems they are only suitable for hosting html or light websites and you can not host sites with message boards etc.
In this way I will not be able to provide a high quality service.
Thank you.

message boards etc.
Why so?
I am not sure why but I have seen several cases of MySQL crash on Cobalt servers. It seems they can not host MySQL very well because of its load.
I know many message boards on cobalt servers and most of them are unsuccessful because of high downtimes.
