View Full Version : Music + Running = Expensive

So, summers coming soon, and it's time to update my musical medium once again.

http://www.iriveramerica.com/

Right now I have the iMP-350, a very nice CD player, but the remote, batteries, etc, take up way too much room in the pocket to run. Then there's the iHP which is 40GB and nicer than an iPod. However, it's harddrive based, and I believe that it would be extremely clunky when running. So at last, there's the iFP's, which are keychain flash players, up to 512MB with a comfortable size. The price, I figure, is around 128MB @ $100, so it's a bit of an investment.

My question is, would you get one, and if so, what size, and which model? I'm having trouble deciding. :)

Edit: Yes, I know I posted about the harddrive player earlier, but that post ended up dead since I was accused of referring people to amazon due to their URL setup.. just straight to the makers site this time, and a different product!

iPod's are pretty nice with the belt clip and quite small and light.

iPods aren't big or clunky at all...just expensive.

Funny you make this thread because I will start to run every sat/sun and went out and bought an mp3 player.

I bought the new iRiver 256mb

http://www.iriveramerica.com/products/iFP-390T.asp

It's great. FM radio, Mic, "Input" plug, and it's small, comes with a arm band, neck chain to hold it and a small case to protect it.

I use AA rechargebale batteries, lasts only 4-5 hrs. Which is fine. I do wish it had it's own internal battery to charge it.

It's great!

How many songs can the 256mb store?

I'm thinking of purchasing the one's in the gigabyte range as i want more storage of songs.

Firstly i think the 256mb are a waste of money if they are going to hold as much songs as normal cd's. However i haven't the faintest idea. So help !!

Well.. I can hold up to 50-60 songs. Right now I have 50 songs and I have like 5mb left. it all depends on the size of the files. A few of the songs I have are 6mb in size, rather than the average 3mbps

It's not HOW many songs it can hold for me, It's the size of the player. I use the mp3 player *only* for running.

if I wanted a regular mp3 player w/ more room, I would have gotten an ipod mini or a regular ipod. But I don't feel running is wroth $290-$500.

You're all ignoring the fact that an iPod has a harddrive. That means it can skip which is what you DON'T want.

Rob, I have the same battery problems in my CD player. However, it's good to know that they're nice!

the iPod doesn't skip. remember how fast hard disks are. the iPod has a 25 minute skip protection buffer (most CD players in comparison have 5-10 seconds)

5-10 seconds? Mine is over a year old and has 40 or 180 second protection.. HardDisks are fast, but if it moves, then why wouldn't it skip?

Trust me, they don't skip at all. You can run for hours and they will never skip. It's called being a quality product.

Very interesting, I'll have to look into it. While it may not be heavy, I don't want something flapping in my pants. :P

iPod don't skip.

But I don't see why I would spend $400 on an iPod to just run. They are bigger than the iRiver and I prefer something like the iRiver.

I will be getting an iPod soon, to use to store programs and music, etc. but not for my excerising.

Yes Rob, but for the price I can only have one or the other, so then it goes down to being practical.. however, I'll still probably go for the smaller one.

You won't be disappointed.

It's as big as a business card.

Tomorrow starts my first day of intense training.

3 hours of walking/running.

Glad I got the music.

Btw, not sure what you have for headphones, the ones that come with the iriver are the cheapie.

I purchased a pair from Sony - http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=uMeJOYH56IOJIMGi0kKDMs7pTs61BfhKvUE=?CategoryName=acc_Headphones_StreetStyle&ProductSKU=MDRG72LP&Dept=acc

And they are great.

Oh, yeah, they are crappy - and you can't get replacements for the foam. I too have sony ones, and they're excellent. I use them so much that the paint's worn off. :)
