View Full Version : Running a Webhosting Company remotely
DomiNET.net 10-31-2001, 01:42 PM Hello Folks,
I want to start a Webhosting company in spanish. In my country the dedicated lines are VERY VERY VERY expensive. Is it possible to get a dedicated server and setup my company and admin it remotely?? accepting payment via credit cards...
How can i solve then technical problems on the server, reboots, backups and stuff??
If this bussiness is possible whats a good place to get the server ??
bteeter 10-31-2001, 01:51 PM Yes. You can get a server and administer it remotely. There are quite a lot of hosts that work that way.
If you are interested in doing something like this, I would recommend using www.Burst.net for your servers. We use them and we have had excellent network and server uptime, as well as support.
Take care,
Brian
DomiNET.net 10-31-2001, 02:27 PM so if i have a problem with an account and i have to reboot or something they can help for a reasonable fee?

hi,
everybody do remote management except the people who colo or have own data centers. i am from india and have lots of servers but never seen any of my server. :bawling:
hey, but it works fine. the only thing you need is good provider with good noc and who can monitor weather your machine is running or not and provide reboots.
now days remote reboots are very popular so that you can reboot your machine yourself no need to call or email your noc.
:cartman:

You may need a panel if you plan to have customers ;)
I've read many praises about rackshack -I believe that's the name-, they come with a lot of bandwidth, and that is yummy :stickout
NetDotHost 10-31-2001, 03:24 PM RaqShack..... Be weary of them.. make sure it is what you want if you go with them. They offer more bandwidth than the server itself can reasonibly handle.. so yeah, they give you a lot of bandwidth, but its no good if you can't use it.
I would recommend searching the forums for what people say about RaqShack, I am not an expert.
As for remote admin, you can reboot a server remotely yourself, as long as nothing is broken and it boots properly afterwards. When you rent a server from somebody they will fix any problems for free if you did not cause them, however if you cause a problem, and you do not have a managed solution, then you may have to pay a fee.
As for managed servers, they cost a lot more money, but the company will administer everything for you.
A lot of this information can be found in other threads, so I won't repost everything.
jtace 10-31-2001, 03:50 PM Just a comment. I use rackshack.net right now, I don't have any complaints. And as far as haveing more bandwidth then you can use. Well as long as you upgrade your ram to 512 MB, you can easily use over 300 GB of bandwidth. I've run up 300 GB in 22 days!! Granted you can't use too much dynamic content/scripts but that is a limitation of the machine, raq4i in this case, and is not unique to rackshack.net.

What makes you think a RaQ4 cannot handle 300 GB of transfer? There are no restrictions on the content, other than adult, warez, other illegal stuff, etc., but If you have image galleries (of whatever form - wallpaper, clip art, photographs, videos, etc.), then I'm sure you would be able to use 300 GB no problem. Is it a powerful server that can handle heavy script type sites, ahhh nope, however your statement above is incorrect. A 486 with 64MB of ram could probably serve 300 GB of data, though I haven't tried.
delemtri 10-31-2001, 08:04 PM Plus they're adding PIII machines now anyway.
DomiNET.net 10-31-2001, 08:07 PM what cpanel do you recommend?? (customizable) i want to translate it to spanish.
I want to offer 20pop email per user, and telnet access, mysql, php. What minimum server do u recommend start with??

most hosts don't charge for server reboots.

for your Cpanel/WHM needs, i recommend Burst.NET™ check out http://www.burst.net/servers/
iwannabe 10-31-2001, 11:44 PM I highly recommend multipleimage.com
I have 4 highend servers with them and I love it.
Mind you, I am not tech savvy person like many people on WHT.
I bother them so much initially and mine are not managed servers.
And they never charged any fees for extra support.
For example, I probably sent them tons of emails asking all kinds
of questions about how to do things with webmin.
To top it off, they just upgraded network between Orlando &
Melbourne to a OC-3 (155Mbps fiber link) in preparation for
Qwest peering into the network, giving their network greater
redundancy & more available bandwidth network wide:D
Many times I considered RackShack.
But, I am just too satisfied with them and their support:D
Man, I should get a job at Multipleimage as salesman:D
DomiNET.net 11-01-2001, 12:02 AM and what control panel are you using?

Was the question for me?
I am using webmin because I do not need CPanel or Plesk
since I don't do web hosting.
It took me some time to learn how to use webmin.
I learned some from this forum, much from multipleimage
and most by trial and errors.
I still do not know all of it. Not even 1/2, but, I know
enough to do what I need to do:D
But, multipleimage offer several control panels.
DomiNET.net 11-01-2001, 12:32 AM i want to offer webhosting
whats the best control panel and how customizable is it?
DomiNET.net 11-01-2001, 10:16 AM I think ill choose rackshack to start my webhosting bussiness.
Questions:
1. How may customers (websites) can i handle on that $99.00 package cobatl raq4?
2. Can i offer cgi, php, mysql to my customers on that platform?
3. Do i have to buy a control pannel software to make my customers able to create emails accounts and manage their accounts?
4. If my bussiness grows rackshack offers me the service to move to a p3?
ReflexHost_M 11-01-2001, 12:34 PM Hi,
Rackshack would be better answering some of the questions, but I'll answer some anyway :)
1. Depends on the cpu load etc. I think most people agree for a Raq with few mysql running processes, about 300Gb of transfer which RackShack offer is about the most you will get out of it without noticing major slowdowns.
2. Raqs support CGI, PHP and MySQL.
3. Raq's come with a control panel that will allow customers to manage their account.
4. Ask RackShack.
DomiNET.net 11-01-2001, 02:35 PM Any other dude here running a webhosting bussiness on rackshack or a cobalt raq4?
Any last complaint about rackshack?
Chicken 11-01-2001, 02:43 PM Just FYI... the Cobalt forum is filled with people running RaQs from rackshack...
WesternMedia 11-04-2001, 02:09 PM Hi Dominet,
I have had a RaQ4i at rackshack since last June, this is my THIRD datacenter, and by FAR the best.
At first, i almost didnt sign up with them, spefically cause of LOTS of posts here complaining, mostly about reboots.
The posts were correct, and in the past, they were not good abot reboots, they had no 24/7 staff in the colocation center. I personally have waited for up to 2 hours for a physical reboot. If someone was in the colo, they would do within minutes. But if not...
I have even been told, i had to wait for some OS restores to finish, so the reboot guy, could catch a ride, with the restore guy. OUCH!
BUT - The head surfer claims they have been aware of problem for a while. They have bought their own colo center, with 2 generators, ... And that they will now have 24/7 staff for reboots.
OTHER than that issue, their support is first class. They will help with ANYthing that control panel is supposed to, though not much beyond that.
I am now putting a second box at www.tera-byte.com in Canada, but keeping my RaQ4 at rackshack. I like it there, and you cant beat the price.
