Can anyone tell me how do I go about getting a .EDU domain for the private school I work for?
And can anyone recommend some reliable, inexpensive registars that host .EDU's?
Thank you in advance.

Contact the government :) .
Seriously, you have to register it with the US government if I'm not mistaken.

I think Network Solutions may be the only people that register .EDUs... you might have to contact them, I think they manage it for the US Gov't. :)

If you are a 4-year degree-granting college or university interested in setting up a Web site for your academic institution, registering a .edu domain name is designed for you (e.g. yourcollege.edu).
There is no cost to register a .edu domain name!
Note: As part of the registration process, you will be required to submit a summary of subjects taught and degrees awarded at your academic institution and an e-mail address to contact your organization. Please have this information available before you begin your search.

I've never tried, but as you can see from that thread, there are definitely come institutions with .edu domain names that are no even colleges.

How could onehave an email address before you have your domain?
"Please email me at harvard267@aol.com in regard to registering hardvard.edu." :D

I think it would have been more like "please contact me at nfsnet!harvard!admin with regard to the harvard.com domain name".
Email did exist before DNS, you know.
Bad example. :) How about the new University of California Campus at Merced?
