Shifting gears on my 92 accord (automatic) used to be smooth and easy... over a year's time it has suddenly become hard to shift gears. Not hard as in... you need to use all your muscles, just harder than usual.

It almost seems that it happened when it got VERY cold outside and the gear froze. but after it warmed up, it's still hard to shift.

What causes this... how to fix it?

it is from the cold, but if it keeps doing that in the spring take it to your mechanic and have them look at it.

92 Accord. My first car was a 90 Accord, same body style . . great car.

Never had shifting gears problems on my accord. Definetly sounds like a transmission problem for a mechanic to look at.

How do you shift gears in an automatic?

Start first just by checking the transmission fluid level. If that's ok, have the fluid changed -- just go to the same place where you get your oil changed.

If that doesn't work, the next thing to have looked into is a problem with the linkage running to the transmission... if that turns out not to be it, that's when you start to worry about something expensive.

Try rebooting the transmission!

A friend's truck had a simular problem, took a lot of effort to shift it's automatic transmission after a cold snap. He took it to the shop. I'll have to ask what they did since my memory is out!
