View Full Version : ASP/MySQL/JDBC
MaTTeD 10-12-2000, 11:18 AM Can anyone recommend a webhost, running *nix (unix or linux), who offers MySQL, some iasp proxy (chilisoft, halcyon), AND JDBC for connectivity between the two. I have found a few hosts that offer asp and mysql - but not the JDBC (they say they will install it but never get around to it).
Otherwise, I'm looking for an account which costs ~ $30/mo, has at least 75MB disk space, and has a decent amount of bandwidth/month.
If anyone can point me to a plan or company, I'd appreciate it. Please remember, I am looking at linux/unix only right now (but afraid I may be forced to go with NT).
Help?
Thanks,
Matt Lochansky
Matt,
I hate to say it, but you might be looking at NT, as I don't know of a single *nix host which offers JDBC properly. On the other hand, plenty of NT/Win2K hosts offer JDBC.
Good luck.
MaTTeD 10-12-2000, 11:01 PM Both my friends server and my personal server are set up with everything you need (of course, only trial versions of iasp). It is _really_ simple to set it all up... however, getting the good connections is the problem - WAY more expensive than the $20-30 I am looking at for a virt host. Already researching NT hosts - nothing to be found in the *nix whosting world! I have persojnally emailed about 20 hosts asking with NO luck! Hard enough to even find one who offers iasp!

marksy 10-13-2000, 12:40 AM Probably because running asp on *nix is a waste of resources - it eats incredible amts of processor time and PHP is far better suited for *nix. Why are you so against NT if you want NT technology?
inwks 10-13-2000, 03:52 AM If u decide to go the MS way, find a host with Win2K rather than NT, as it is a lot better (speed and reliability).
I host at InterLand (just waiting for the scorning replies), who I have found to be quite reliable over the last 2 years(i.e. no worse than the rest)
MaTTeD 10-13-2000, 07:12 AM The reason I prefer unix over NT is simple - I have administered my own linux system and have been on _only_ used linux/unix for my web pages for the past 6 years. I like to stick with what I know!
As for the thing about resources on linux, I don't think that difference can compare with the difference Windows (NT/2000) vs. Linux has on memory.
But - by the end of the weekend I will probably be hosting my site on NT/2000. Wish me luck!

Tee hee! Totally understandable.
Just curious to know, why don't you learn PHP? It's not hard to learn and does pretty much everything ASP does, and interfaces with PHP/MySQL like a dog does with a nice tree on the nature strip.
MaTTeD 10-13-2000, 07:48 AM Well, my progression through web programming has been interesting. Of course, started with straight HTML back in 1995. From there, I learned PERL and with that some CGI. I actually did learn PHP3 acouple years ago (not very well... just enough to see how it works). And then one of my friends introduced me to asps, which I just prefered over PHP... Maybe because he was able to show me more in depth features and all.
Problem now is, I have the back engine for my website completed and switching it over to PHP is more work than I'd want to do! Plus, it would mean relearning everything. I'll stick with asps on NT rather than moving to PHP.

Ahhhhhh. Totally understood.
Good luck - you got an NT host in mind?
MaTTeD 10-13-2000, 07:56 AM I'm looking for a host as we speak. I actually looked up KBS and Interactive (the two other guys who replied) and neither of them offered anything I like.
Do you have any recommendations? I'm considering OChosting.com... Thier NT400 plan is a little more money than I'd like to spend, but they seem to offer the most.
You have any suggestions? (and for everyone else, don't just pump your hosting service. Only let me know if you REALLY think you can help!)
I'd usually recommend my current NT/Win2K host, WebExpose (http://www.webexpose.net), as they have ASP and MySQL support. However, I'm not sure about JDBC support (despite support Servlets and JRun) so you might want to ask them.
I think we had a discussion on JDBC a few weeks ago in another topic - you might want to do a search (if you haven't already done so) and see what you come up with.
And don't worry about hosts pumping their service - a little glare from me and they shut up. The rules specify they can't advertise their service except through their sig.
marksy 10-13-2000, 09:36 PM Yeah, we (KBS) don't do any NT/2K hosting. You could look around for a RaQ4 host, they have Linux and chiliASP - I don't know of any to recommend though, sorry. I won't slam Interland, it's been done enough, but we were with them and left really quickly after talking with one of their support reps (cluelesssss!)
MaTTeD 10-13-2000, 10:12 PM I have decided to give OChosting.com a chance - Their NT400 plan seems pretty strong and so far, the support I have been given has been fairly good (as long as you email someone directly, and not their generic aliases (e.g. sales@ochosting.com).
I was not able to find a unix host that had the JDBC component I needed. I found quite a few with iasp and mysql (almost all had mysql). What's funny is of all those things, the jdbc is not only free, but very easy to set up...
I tried an account with websitecreations.net initially - at that time I just assumed if they offered chilisoft and mysql there would be a mechanism for using asp to connect to the database. First problem - the guy who did support set up my DNS (after a second try) with the wrong nameserver! And then had the audacity to tell me (after I complained) that they were wrong and I had to email someone to take care of it! And this is after he either didn't try or couldn't set up the jdbc program (I'm telling you all - it is _REALLY_ simple! I've done it myself!) It was not a good experience (they have perhaps the nicest webpage setup of any host I've seen to - I was really impressed with their page and hosting plans...)
So that's my story... Hopefully, OChosting will provide me with what I need to get my website up and running. I've put so many hours into coding it, I'd like to see some people using it soon!
