Ok don't kill me.

I currently have a geocities site that I would like to move to my new webhost. I am somewhat familiar with FTP, i've FTPed from my computer to my host, but i was wondering...

Can I FTP my site from geocities to my new webhost?

I don't want to have to save each and every page I have (over 100) onto my hard drive and then FTP to my new host... help, suggestions, as always will be greatly appreciated...

thanks much,

Stuart

You can do it through SmartFTP ( http://www.smartftp.com/ )
I haven't had any experience with the ftp client first hand.
If you have SSH or Telnet access your can run a ftp through that, but that might be a bit more complicated and harder for you, and your new hosting account probably doesn't have it. If you've got a nice host who's bored he might do it for you ;) .

They probably fixed any problems with that, but I beg you to PLEASE for the love of all that is holy, back up all those pages! Last time I used the programmed it removed all the files instead of transferring them. You NEED to have a local copy of your site. While saving all those files to the hard drive may be a pain, what happens if they all disappear on you? Probably more of a pain to recreate each and every one of them.

I agree, its best to have a local copy :) .

Thanks guys, i have ws_ftp... isn't that essentially the same as smartftp?

Nope.
SmartFTP allows multiple open connections to different accounts, where you can drag and drop from one server to the other. With WS-FTP (IMO its a bit limiting) you can only have 1 open connection.

According to the other replies this is apparently possible. But: JUST DO NOT DO IT.

Why?

If you view the sourcecode of any geocities page, you'll see a nice little javascript that the geocities server put there. This little piece of code is geocities' revenge if you switch hosts. Because if you do not (manually) remove it on every page, it will do all kinds of funny and unfunny things to your site.

So if you really want to save yourself time and trouble, download all your pages to your harddrive, clean them of the geocities code and *only then* upload them to your new host.

Trust me, I have been there. It's the easiest way.

Isn't the Geocities code inserted at runtime? If not though.. get a program that has batch search and replace such as Homesite.. save you LOTS of time. And IMO.. you should just ftp all the files to your hard drive and then re-upload them to your new host.

thanks everyone for your assistance (rewdog!)

Trekchick, i uploaded and ftped everything pretty easily... i was quite happy. I was then testing my site and saw those annoying geopopups comeup... i was like what the f! Checked the source and there it was sitting at the bottom pointing and lauging at me... good ol' X10 ads are everywhere...

yep... went through about 150 pages and cleaned each and every single one up. Was not a happy camper. I was thinking about using geocities to create my next site and simply upload it into my future webhost since i was so familiar with the geocities editor... but no longer!
