How much traffic do you all oversell on a server.
Lets say you rent a server with 200 gig/month
how many packages of 10 gig would you put on that server??
20 is the safest option, but only few people do that i think.
most users choose their package on the traffic included, but most of the time they don't use it all, especially with mod-gzip installed. So what percentage do the users normally use(on average)

This is a question I would like to know the answer to aswell. I know I take the safe route but I would like to know about overselling.

I've a server with 100 gb of bandwidth and I'm planning to sell 1000 accounts on it of 1 gb each...will it be fine ?

Do the math. 1000x 1GB = 1000GB. With a 1GB bandwidth plan, it is very likely that customers will use up everything and more.

Once the 20 accounts are filled up, and if you still have a batch of bandwidth left, add 1 more. Evaluate, then repeat. You should ALWAYS leave a cushion though. If they are using around 180 gigs, i'd say leave it and get a new server.

Hmm, selling 1000 1GB plans and expecting everyone to use less than 1/10th of their plan... yeah, sounds great! Good luck!

LMAO!!! No offense man, but, NOT A CHANCE IN H*LL!!! I would not put 150 accoutns on 100GB of bandwidth at 1GB per account.
I mean, you can stretch it a little, but not like that.

Let's think of a situation
Let's say it costs you $2/GB. Your packages are
$10 for 10GB
$20 for 15GB
$30 for 20GB
Could you get away with this? Is it feasable? Is this about right for overselling or too much?

The bigger your plans are, the less likely your customers are going to use all of their bandwidth. I currently have plans like you suggested (mostly the $10 for 10GB). I have 70 accounts on a server, and am only averaging 10 GB/ month for the whole server. ( and 7GB / month of this is from 2 of the sites).
You can play the averages game with bandwidth, just don't get mad when someone actually uses all of their bandwidth! :D

Well here the facts on our view:
1. We do have app. 500 clients on one server with 100 GB traffic.
2. We do offer unlimited traffic.
3. At the end of the month we have still 1 to 20 GB unused traffic.
So, if you have no porn- or download customers i see no reason why not to run 200 to 600 clients on a machine with 100 GB.

A lot of my "adult" clients are really nice customers. They just link to other sites, or use geocities or something for their images.
The only thing is that their linking script take up some CPU, but for the traffic they are excellent.
I also have a "dance" site with pictures of her advertures in the nightlife in the netherlands. This site has less visitors but much more traffic because of the big amount of pictures.
