I have 5 new 550 Mhz PIII
128 Mb RAM
20 gb IDE hard disk
etc.

I can't upgrade it as for now.

I just wanted to know if it will be able to host 200-300 very small sites or 100-200 medium sites or 50-100 larges sites ?

Any combination of the above ?

I tried searching in the form but couldn't get a specific enough answer to this.

By running site...I mean...running them well..very well...not slowing down the performance to unacceptable levels.

Thanks

I wouldn't put 50-100 large sites or 200-300 small sites on a server that only has 128MB RAM. I would get at least 256MB if not 512MB.

I'm not asking if I should upgrade or not.
I know I must upgrade...but present situation don't let me to !!!!

So...how many sites under present config's should be hosted on this server.

how many small ?
how many medium ?
how many big ?

again....128 Mb RAM is all I have got for now !!!

Did I tell you...my provider charge me ...the same amount :
additional 256 Mb = price of another server :))

SO ..what would u suggest ?

Shouldn't I have another server instead of having additional 256 Mb Ram....:))

And don't ask me to change the provider..I'm having 1 year contract with them...and except for the prices....I'm just too happy :)

ANd yeah....I can make it to 256 Mb...but that would also cost me half the amount..I would pay for a new server !

With 128MBs of RAM I don't think it could handle more than 50 small to medium size HTML-only sites. Throw in CGI and/or PHP scripts and cut that number down to 10.

Just 10 sites....???
Just 50 sites even if they are small static sites ?????

mannn...I'm sorry but I heard people saying they host >100 sites on Raq4 with 128 MB Ram

Even a guy told me he hosts >75 sites on Raq3 with 64 Mb RAM

Are they liers ??????

 I'm tooooooo confused now !

Everyone has different opinions. I used to rent a RAQ4i from Rackshack with 128MBs of RAM, and it could only handle around 20 HTML sites. (One account did have a small PHP script. And it did do around 20GBs a month in bandwidth.) Even with that amount of sites it crashed every once-in-a-while.

Mann...I've taken two Raq4i with 128 MB RAm
Five 550 Mhz server with 128 Mb RAM

All of them on a six months contract.

Upgrades are not allowed :( :bawling:

should I commit sucide ?

Actually you can do

50 - 100 sites on each server :) depending on usage tho.

10 sites? Hitting the bottle a lot recently? :D

Depending on the amount of traffic each site generates (as long as many of them are under 1GB/mo.) you should not have too much trouble hosting up to 70-90 sites with that setup. This also depends on the software you are running as well as your control panel.

Honestly, how do you define small sites. My site does less than 50 megs of http traffic a month (and probably as much as that in email traffic since I subscribe to a few high-volume email lists). You can host quite a few of accounts that only use under 100 meg a month of bandwidth on a server with 128 megs of RAM. Of course some people would say that a site that uses a gig of transfer a month small. Saying small, medium, and large accounts does not really tell us much.

If you said something like "I have 200 sites that contain only static html files and use a total of 15 gigs a month between all of them," I'm sure most people here would tell you that putting them on a server with 128 megs of RAM would be fine.
