View Full Version : confusing disk usage warning

Got my sites completely transferred to the raq and my domain names are resolving to the new IP! All has gone well on the transfer from a p3 to a raq - and my sites are loading 10 to 20% faster!

Then this morning I get an frightful email from the raq:

-------
The filesystem [/] is getting very full

is getting very close to full. This is very dangerous for the server
and can cause unexpected errors to occur. You either need to move some
files to another storage device and delete them from the Cobalt server
or delete them altogether. Consult the documentation for help adding
storage to your Cobalt server.

Total disk space: 726.04 MB
Free disk space: 49.33 MB
Percent Used: 93 %

-------------

Now, I would think '/' refers to the root? Which is all of the harddisk - no? I have a system with a 20g home drive and there should be plenty of room.

On my 'server management' page, I have an orange blinky at 'active monitor'. A click on it reveals an orange circle on 'disk usage'. A click on that reveals all green circles, though the 'Operating System and Programs' is green, the report says that it has 920 total, 222 used, used percentage is 75%.

Vitual sites use 7.3 percent. Home total report:

home total=17257.3 MB free=15575.4 MB percentage used=10.0

So the question is what is this email (and the orange blinky - which I am guessing is related) about?

And, with the 'Operating System and Programs', is there a way for me to adjust that to give it more room?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts you'all have on this :)

Opps, I will do a search before I start a new topic next time

I found references to a 4.0.1 logfile patch that fixes this problem. I don't know where to find it though, I looked at
http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq4.eng.html

and don't see it there, nor on the packages page.

Is there another page of patches that I have missed?

Yeah, I think that got swallowed by something else, though I just noticed that *my* / is flogged... grrrr...

I installed the 3rd one down... http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq4.eng.html

Dropped it 2% ptttthhhhhptttt

I installed that this evening too and it didn't seem to do anything. I still have:

/dev/hda1 - at - 94% /

and growing.

Will the patch maybe move the logs when they are reset for the day (they are reset once a day - correct? or are they realtime)?

I am new at this raq-stuff, you indicated you're having the same trouble, what are you doing with it?

Thanks,

Chris

Well, mine is at 88% (down from 90%) and I'll probably go in and see if there is anything I can move/remove to /home.

Chicken - I really appreciate your help, I am a bit lost on this...

I would think that what I need to do is go through the directories that are on /dev/hda1 and figure out what is bloated and move it.

What I don't know is, how can I tell what directories are on /dev/hda1 ?

Well, in another thread someone said that /usr/admserv/html/.cobalt/report was the demon, but I checked this and that patch might have altered it:

/usr/admserv/html/.cobalt/report has been aliased:
report -> /home/.cobalt/report

I dunno... still looking....

ummm... not real sure what I am doing, but I moved usr/local usr/doc and usr/share to the home directory & made symlinks to them from usr to home. That brought the disk space down from 95% to 66%.

Anyone see any problems with me moving these particular directories? What others would be safe to move?

Don't know if this will 'fix' the problem, but at least it is out of imminent danger,

Have to take a peek into those dirs and see what's there...

arrrggghh, this disk usage stuff is aggravating.

This morning I get two emails from the raq that say two of my sites are 'close to or over quota':
------
Quota Limit: 50.00 MB
Quota Used: 179.34 MB
Percent Used: 358 %
------

But.... when I go to the panel it says everything is fine and both this sites use less than half of what is allocated to them (including both site and user stats).

Christopher, If your still having problems check inside your tmp directory you can delete files in there no problem. And if you need more help email technics@unixfusion.co.uk and ill do my best to help you. We had this problem on our RAQ we got upto 75% at one stage and i managed to sort things.
