Well, you most likely need a dedicated server.
I played my share of gaming and had quite a bit of gaming servers, from Tetrinet, to unreal tournament, hoverrace, and tribes 2.
Generally if you are looking for the low cost method, get an old 500 mhz that someone has lying around, and find someone in college on a fast connection :) . It works pretty well. If you have a pretty good size guild/team, you can ask everyone for about 30-50 bucks and you can raise enough money to buy one or to build a new one. You may have to colocate if you don't have a friend on a good connection ;) .
Web hosting companies are all different when it comes to game hosting, because it can eat up a lot of bandwidth, and the reqs are different. Its best to call up the company and ask.
I have a friend who runs the http://www.fallen-angels.net CS division which is some of the best CS/Half life servers on the net. I'd suggest checking it out.

Mention Rewdog from })FA and Hoverrace and you might get special treatment ;) .
