Is dual over kill for just a webserver? Some told me dual is only good for databases. I thought dual is good cause you can get alot more cpu power in a 1U.

NetDotHost 10-28-2001, 07:34 PM Hello: From what I understand, if you have a lot of different tasks going on, then dual CPU is good. However, if your server is just serving sites that have large files to download, and get lots of hits to them, then you probably don't need it. If you were hosting a ton of little sites, then you may want it because all of the sites being acessed at once will slow down the server. I think that is somewhat how it works. mikeknoxv 10-28-2001, 07:50 PM Dual CPUs won't increase the amount of MHZ your machine will run at. However, it will allow you to run more faster. If you're running database software, DNS, mail server applications, etc., on the same server you're using to host sites, I would defenitely go with dual CPUs. dherman76 10-28-2001, 07:54 PM Just think of it this way, you have 2 engines doing the work. How can that be bad? Planet Z 10-28-2001, 08:09 PM Dual CPUs IS overkill for most webservers. However, there are some servers that actually need it. If you're just going to be running 100 Apaches and some other random stuff, dual processors is a complete waste of money. However, if you plan on running 1000+ Apaches at the same time, it becomes feasible. |
