If you visit the forums at Aletia (http://www.aletiahosting.com/) you'll find growing frustration at the moment, secondary to servers going down, poor response time from support, and lack of communication. The folks seem well-intentioned, but perhaps growing to fast. Plus, it seems like when there's problems, they take a wait and see attitude before really getting in there and substantially addressing it (changing out the equip). I sure hope they can back back to where it sounds like they were.

i haven't had any problems with them... where's this frustration you're talking about?

mikethechap is actually right. Several customers of Aletia are really a little bit disappointed. Aletia has some problems in the last time (downtimes, failing SMTP server) and I can understand that people are not happy about that, but I would not say Aletia's service or support is going down. They might not be as great as the people are used to, but for now Aletia is IMHO still a good and recommendable webhosting company.

thats strange, maybe the machine i'm on is ok because i haven't had any problems whatsoever lately.

I also got several error messages from the monitoring service, but generaly speaking, it's still a good service.

which service do you use?

Aletia's support decline I'm guessing is because of one of their machine's being down. They have had to deal with a lot more support because of that and also are working on fixing it...

I find that they are still nice and helpful, and I haven't really had any problems.

Is this thread considered old?

I'd like to say that some of the recent failures at Aletia have been user
propagated.

http://www.aletiaforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1037

Even a looping script sometimes won't bump the load over the 'notify admin mark'.

Just a thought.
I'm still incredibly happy with the service they're providing.
I even put together a little movie about them that I might release soon.

I just signed up for a second account with them... it's been 36 hours and no account details yet, but this is a minor quibble.
Their site and payment acknowledgement email does advertise a 24 hour setup.

I've had the previous account for about two weeks and have not had any problems. I'm quite satisfied to this point.

I'm happy with them now. At least right now the support isnot slow ,and server speed is ok . Sometimes , specially the weekend, they reply so fast ( within 2 hours, they and I exchanged 7 emails total) .

Hope they will improve better and better . Their first plan is ok, but the second and the third is a little high (their $30/month plan is equal to hostrocket's $15/month plan) . They should give some more space for it .

As hosts grow there will be slight ups and downs as they adjust and Im sure theyre growing pretty quickly, but I doubt that they are going to hit a downward spiral or anything, and seem like a stable company in both the near and long term outlooks.

I get the feeling Aletia has grown pretty quickly since they started. With that sort of growth sometimes things can get a little slow in regard to personalized support. Generally speaking if they're a good company (which all reports suggest they are), they'll be putting things into place right now to handle the added demand.

I think it's a case of, if you've been happy with them in the past, hold on while they recover from their growth spurt :) Having a server go belly-up is always going to put a strain on support no matter how big you are. Once they get that fixed, I'm sure things will return to normal for the rest of their customers.

RE: Aletia

I recently signed up with them, and emailed them with a question this morning, and got a response back in about 3 minutes. Can't get any faster then that. All my previous responses before I signed up, were returned in a matter of minutes also, always under an hour.

Good luck,

David

Just one thing that I am not happy with Aletia is that ,they said they give us static unique ip . And when I ask them, if they give us that ip, so I can request for the reverse dns of ip (like if dns domain.com >>> ip , and when dns ip >>> domain.com) . When I ask that , they make a new page ( I guess, because there's not that page before) and said that I have to pay $15 for that .

It's not worth to pay that, so I stop asking . Man .

Update on Aleita, been with them 3 days now, and 2 of the 3 days have experienced multiple outages. Three times yesterday they were down, and down again right now, which makes it the second time today. I'm on their Panda server by the way, which appears to be the one having all the problems... Whatever the case, I think I've had enough. Anyone have any new recommendations?

My simple minimum requirements in which I'd like to stay around the $10 a month price range. I just want something reliable with some good fast bandwith and not be on an overloaded server.

At least 5 gigs of bandwith a month
100 megs of web space
emails doesn't matter, at least 10
mailing list
Nice control panel setup...
Own IP addy

Also, in a reliable NOC would be nice..

Thanks,

David

Try to look for a host based at NAC.net - there's not a lot of chatter about that one compared to some other NOC's on this forum, but they are a very classy operation center.

Yes, I've seen nothing but positives about Nac.net. Actually, Aletia was going through there. They'd be fine with me. I got a few places I'm looking at who go through them and Level3, so we'll see. I'm open to anymore suggestions though...

Thanks,

David

I saw one of your posts at the HR forum. Your site was moved to Aletia the day after that post I read. Then I saw your posts at Aletia. Not having much luck, I'd say.

My recommendations, like they usually are:

Hosting Matters (http://www.hostmatters.com) - at NAC
FutureQuest (http://www.futurequest.com) - not at NAC

Never been with or posted at the HR forum. That must of been someone else. But as far as Aletia goes, and my luck, if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all. I was just looking at hostmatters.com and they seem pretty decent. I'm also looking at palmversa for a potential switch. So far, both of those look pretty good. Both are NAC.net NOCs with pretty much identical tracer routes, both going through level3 and pwebtech.

Thanks,

David

It's a damn shame you're having problems with Aletia - I have never had any issues with them and find them very very helpful.....

I've read mostly good things about them also, but the server that all their new customers are going on has big problems. Yet, they still keep putting people on it from some of the PM's I received on their board from other users getting frustrated also.

Their standard response reply to my emails, we had to reboot the server, and are monitoring it. Monitoring WHAT? Fix the thing, don't watch it go down again and again and again..... Rebooting the server time and time again isn't going to fix the problem! I'm not a tech freak, I know enough though, and know that rebooting sure isn't going to cure whatever the problem is with that server....

okay, stupid question - but have you asked to be moved to another server?

Peeps
11-15-2001, 07:07 AM
I'm sorry about that, David. I was confusing you with someone else. They are the ones who jumped from HR to Aletia and then had the yo-yo effect. Of course, they have the same problem as you right now, which is too bad.

genaldi

Timbo, not yet.. I probably would if they would at least give me halfway decent respones to my simple email questions. As it is now, I really don't want nothing to do with them, 5 outages in 2 days and still adding people to that sever, doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm sure they're a fine company and all that, but I'll pass.

Peeps, No problem, I know who you're talking about that was previous with HR, we've conversed back and forth a few times about the current problems. As for hostmatters.com, Annette just replied to my email in the middle of the morning with all the info that I asked them. Right now, they're at the top of my VERY short list. Heck, I might sign up with them in a little while, get that DNS change going before Aletia goes down again maybe...

Thanks again,

David

Well, I would ask to be moved to a different server ASAP if you're going to stay there....

What was it about hostmatters that you didn't like, compared to Aleita?

David

timbo
11-15-2001, 07:38 AM
It was more what Aletia had over Hostmatters that made it for me... The fact you can have 4 sites under one account for a low price of $9.99 a month was amazing (1 main account and then 3 Multi-Hosted Domain sites)

10 gig of bandwidth with 200mb of space PLUS the fact they install most server extensions you ask for on their servers is another rather good touch.

Hostmatters DOES have excellent support. But they couldn't come near Aletia's range of features. Plus I managed to get http://www.theexchangeproject.org working straight away on Aletia but it was going crazy on the Hostmatters server. Stupid me, no doubt.

Plus you have to send your picture over to get telnet access.....

And they don't use Webalizer.

Erm.....

That's about it ;)

I *hate* the fact you've been having a bad time with Aletia because I can honestly say I have had the most fantastic experience with them.... wonderfully helpful and very quick to respond to support requests.

After I tried *****, ADDR,HOSTSAVE,LINUX WEB HOST I never thought I would find a good, low budget, fully featured host company - but I reckon Aletia are near as damn it!

But like I said - Hostmatters are a very solid host... good support..... but for me, these extras I get from Aletia are priceless.......

You must have been with them quite awhile ago, probably when they only had the Alabanza servers and had to work within those constrictions. All of the things you mention about Aletia are things HM do as well - are you aware they have servers at NAC running cPanel (which uses Webalizer)? I mean, check this out and look at the timestamps on the messages between the request and the completion. You just can't get much better:

http://forums.hmdns.net/showthread.php?threadid=2899

I admit I'm a little biased, and now that all the Alabanza people are being moved, those people get to look forward to even greater things now, too. Not that there's anything wrong in general with Alabanza, but the move to NAC six or seven months ago has been one of the best decisions HM ever made. IMO, of course. :D

Yes, you're correct about the extras that you get with Aletia for $9.95, but for me, I really don't need 10 gigs or 200 megs or telenet for that matter, so the $11 plan at Hostmatters would be perfect for what I need. And their support is unreal, she emails back within minutes at this time of the morning.

Also, they do use Webalizer for their stats, at least on their demo they do...

I'll wait and see what Aletia has to say in the morning was the cause of their last 2 hour outage. If it's the same old "we had to reboot" and are "monitoring" story, I'm outta there for sure... I already got one foot out the door, the other depends on their response, or lack of.

Take care,

David

Peeps,

Annette was just explaining the transition to me from Alabanza, and how much better it's working out. I have to agree, I personally wouldn't host on an Albanaza based outfit, from what I've seen out there....

Peeps,

Just received a reply from Annette again, she said she'd even match the exact same package that I was getting at Aletia at the same $9.95 price, even though I didn't even ask about that. I just said I could probably live without the 10 megs bandwith and 200 megs disk space in my previous email..

Now it doesn't get any better than that...

Just made the switch, she's even giving me 30 days free to show me what they got over there, as well as matching Aletia's plan item for item... Can't beat that!

genaldi your account was on a new machine which has been going down without any apparent cause, which is why we are checking into it and working with the people who provided us with the machine, the issue only affects accounts on that machine and we offered to move you to another machine.

Do note that our machines are located at NAC, however as you know the issue had nothing to do with the reliability of the data center, it can happen anywhere to any host.

In any case, we apologize for the inconvenience caused, thanks for having been with us and best wishes with your new host, Hosting Matters does have a good reputation and I'm sure they will take good care of you.

Update: For those interested we are replacing this particular machine (panda) with a new one: http://aletiaforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=1141

I'm very happy with Aletia. The server I was on had some problems recently with downtime. It felt like, at the time, nothing much was been done to solve the problem, but the Aletia support offered to transfer any accounts to a new server (those who wanted it). I decided against this, and at present, the uptime monitor for the server reads:

Uptime 16 days 22 hours 34 minutes

David, I have no doubt you'll be extremely pleased with what you've found.

Mark, I'm happy that Aletia is taking some firm action on that problem. The fact that you keep the details out in public is also a lot better than some hosts who try to sweep everything under the rug.

I don't know if it's aletia.com is slow, or just webhostingtalk.com is faster . My site is host with aletia, and although I open browser and come to it first (before 1 sec) , then I tried to load webhosting.com , but everytime the webhosting.com index still load before my index site does.

Can anyone test for me please , and tell if I am wrong .

I got the tep shop installed in 5 mins after signing up with Hostmatters, may be you did something wrong.

Yes, I currently have 2 sites with hostmatters, and I will likely move one of them to Aletia because that site takes about 8GB a month, which is better to go with Aletia for the money. Another nice thing I love about Aletia is 10 databases  (you can never find a host gives you that many database at $9.95/month). I wish hostmatters just gives me 5 on their plan B1000, but no, only 3. I'm a heavy PHP/mySQL user, and although I can install all scripts in one database, I still want to have as many as possible to make the backup of each script easier.

But if your site has about 3-4GB, hostmatters is a better choice, storage doesn't matter to me. And I found support from Aletia kind of slow, 5 hours after sending email, while most of replies from Hostmatters is within 20 mins.

Hi Nam-

Send Annette an email asking her for extra databases. I believe she'll work something out with you.;)

And I agree that Annette and Stephanie are great. They have also made additions to the crew (Dave and Kevin) since they are growing so much. I think they are trying to prevent growing pains before they start. What really impressed me was the way they never hide anything. If there is a problem they always post it in their forums. They give updates on the situation, details about the problem, and what they did to resolve it.

No, I do not work for HM, but probably 30 of our accounts are on their servers.

Peeps,

Couldn't be happier with Hostmatters. Annette has the best and fastest response to any host that I've ever dealt with. Their bandwith is fast and clean, and servers are nowhere near being overloaded, there's practically no load at all on the one I'm on. And the fact that she went out of her way to match the same plan/price I had with Aletia for $9.95, and threw in 30 free days of service, speaks volumes about their support and caring attitude for the customer.

As for Aletia, no hard feelings towards them, they're a good company I'm sure, I just got in with them at the wrong time and I could't deal with outages everyday, they've since replaced that server I was on, I wish them the best....

Take care,

David

PS: As for the user who said Aletia has ICQ and AIM support, they weren't logged into ICQ any day that I was with them, and their suppor responses via email are much longer than Hostmatters. Hostmatters is on ICQ everyday, including right now....
