I'm sure many others have different looks on both operating systems.. Windows Negative: Cost ($700.00 - 2500.00 ) ... Its made by microsoft... nuf said.. - Slow security patches. Windows Adventages.. - ... Ummm ....... - Closed Source Linux Positive .. - Free - Open Source - Flexible - Fast Kernal As you can see i'm a linux person myself... Windows i'm sure has many more advantages.... but .. well its made by bill gates... sji2671 10-26-2001, 06:38 PM indeed but that didn't exactlt answer my Q Why do hosts use windows, is there any advantage for win2k rather than unix :-) Jason_Berresford 10-26-2001, 06:46 PM I suppose it didn't answer your question :)) .. Windows has a few good features that hosts like, I dont use them often .. but to name a couple.. 1)They are easy to setup. 2) For $2500.00 US .. you can get Windows 2000 Profession .. and fairly easily support Load balancing between two systems. 3) Its windows, a lot of programs are support on a windows platform. 4) Its windows.. more people are firmilar with Microsoft systems. Thats my best answer.. i'm sure there are window hosts here which have valid views on why to use windows instead of Linux. sji2671 10-26-2001, 06:47 PM I know windows bashing is a worldwide sport, but win2k aint uncommon. Why use win2k over other servers ? Simple Q and this seems the right place 2 ask ? ReflexHost_M 10-26-2001, 06:56 PM 2k or NT is the *only* solution you should consider if you are using a _proper_ ASP site, as ApacheASP and Chill!soft ASP are both somewhat limited in their support. 2k / NT also support MS Access databases. Another thing you might find useful when using 2k or NT hosting, as an end user, is that you don't have to CHMOD :) Matt kb_ 10-26-2001, 06:57 PM Maybe I'm wrong, I live on linux myself, but... Windows Advantages - Full ASP & CFM - MS SQL - Produced by a company that obviously won't go away. I'm not really sure about any other advantages. kb_ 10-26-2001, 06:58 PM Originally posted by ReflexHost_M 2k or NT is the *only* solution you should consider if you are using a _proper_ ASP site, as ApacheASP and Chill!soft ASP are both somewhat limited in their support. 2k / NT also support MS Access databases. Am I right in saying its easier to install and rmanage as it integrates well, user friendly being graphicly driven as apose to command promt driven like unix Palm 10-26-2001, 08:58 PM Windows is not better then UNIX and UNIX is not better then windows. I would assume hosts use UNIX, because it's the OS they are most familiar with. UNIX (Linux actually) has many control panels that windows doesn't have and UNIX is more flexible when it comes to administrating. Most hosts use Windows not UNIX. Most hosts from this board use UNIX but you can't compare that to the actual host number in the world. Jeff @ DH 10-26-2001, 09:10 PM I'll admit that I'm biased - I'm a Linux-oriented person (though I use Mac OS X on the desktop, it's essentially a Unix-derivative at this point). Here are the pluses and minuses I see, from the point of view of a hoster and hostee: Linux: + It's free + Stable + Very well supported, software-wise + Command line interface + Good performance - Less 'official' support Windows: + Pretty decent software support + Easy to administer - Expensive - You're on an "upgrade treadmill" - Relatively less stable than a good Unix - From a company with a poor security track record - Higher hardware requirements I didn't focus much on specific software availability. Obviously if you need ASP and MSSQL, that's going to color your decision somewhat. I personally prefer PHP, Perl, and MySQL support - and you're going to work best with Linux or another *nix in that case. Jason_Berresford 10-26-2001, 09:10 PM If I remember correctly, windows servers take up about 60% of the industry .. Linux/Unix.. about 25% The other 15% is misc .. Palm I agree with your statement, both OS's have advantages and disadvantages, its up to the individual person to make up there minds. One of the main reasons I myself like linux better is from personal experience, with the uptime. From my "personal" experience, its hard to keep a windows system from staying up and running with out crashing (IE . Windows 98, ME ) ... Windows 2000 is more stable... but in my experiences, not nearly as stable as a Linux box. Bah ... This topic is a very complex.... errr... we are turning this topic into a complex one. Fun to talk about .. but I suppose in the end, its all personal experiences. Neko =^.^= 10-26-2001, 10:22 PM When it comes down to it, if you don't need ASP or MS-SQL, don't use windows unless you have a good reason. Jason_Berresford 10-26-2001, 10:32 PM Neko .. Any not use CHILIASP and MySQL for Linux?.... They seem to work just fine :) Neko =^.^= 10-26-2001, 10:47 PM If you absolutely need MS-SQL then use Windows and btw, instead of ASP, just use PHP. :D Jason_Berresford 10-26-2001, 10:48 PM Of course :) PHP all the way ... Our head designer swears by it. |
