Hi Guys,
I am a newbie, I don't know Linux or programming and I don't know how to use PLESK. But I would like to have a dedicated server, which has PLESK already installed. I am not sure whether I would be able to manage the server and therefore I would like to ask a couple of questions:

1. Do you need to know Linux in order to use PLESK, or do you need to use Linux from time to time to maintain the server?

2. What are some of the most frequent problems with a server that uses Plesk?

3. What exactly must I do to move a website from addr.com to my server. Because someone told me about DNS but I am not sure what I must do exactly and how long the transfer takes.

4. What is the ftp address that the client uses to update their website, is like ftp.domain.com?

5. I would like to offer my clients MiVA. My questin is MIVA hard to install and manage?

6. What is SSL exactly and what do I need to do to get SSL on my server?

7. Do you think it is a big jump to go straight to a dedicated server?

10x

Hello Thebeginner,

I think you better start as a reseller so that you can learn while you can still provide hosting services to your clients.

The learning experience will be on how to handle support questions from your clients... there are so many... the most benefits that you being a reseller... whenever your clients ask you a question that you are not sure... simply ask your host and in this way... you learn as you earn... ;)

It is better for you to know linux although most of the things can be done by using control panel softwares to manage your server.

Just my thoughts ;)

I agree.

It does not sound like you are ready to have your own server.

If for some reason you really do need your own server, I would suggest getting a managed server, but that comes wit added costs.

Have you considered the costs at all? Do you realize that a Plesk license is about $100 US, and you are going to have to pay at least $100 US for your server rent? Not to mention, if you cannot manage the server if something were to happen, you are going to have to pay a lot more to have a managed server. If you don't get a managed server, and something goes wrong you will have to pay a huge hourly rate to have them work on your server, as it is not in the contract.

Another option, would be to hire a part time network admin, or find a friend that can help you out.

If you do decide you want a reseller account, I would recommen http://www.ecommercediscovery.com I have used them in the past and they have great plans and prices. You get a virtual server in this case, and have almost all the power of a dedicated server.

You can contact me if you would like more info, I would be happy to help. Send me a PM or email me at mike@paradonsolutions.com.

Good Luck to you.
~Mike.

Hello Mike,

Can I email you to have an email *discussion* about your experience with Josh? If you have AIM or ICQ... that would be great :)

Thanks.
