View Full Version : what is your internet connection speed ?
mahinder 10-26-2001, 01:18 AM just wondering what is your internet connection speed.
my is 56 kbps dial-up modem. i will shift soon towards dsl when i will shift my office to main metro area because at present dsl is not available in my office area :(
:) :cartman:
cperciva 10-26-2001, 01:31 AM 100Mbps, thanks to the university :)
Jedito 10-26-2001, 04:34 AM ADSL 256 kbps but is not real, my ISP sucks big!
Standard earthlink 56k dialup.
Justin S 10-26-2001, 07:01 AM I've got 512kbps/128kbps DSL access.
Domenico 10-26-2001, 07:18 AM 512kbps DOWN :-)
16kbps UP :-(
This all thanks to athome. As you can see download is very nice and it easily get to this and sometimes even higher.
the upload however is capped to much in my opinion and should be higher.
Nevertheless it works ok and I never have problems with it.
I love my cable connection!
XTStrike 10-26-2001, 08:49 AM T1 or T3 depending on which Proxy I use :D
Switched 100mbit to dual OC3's thank you very much :)
rockergrrl 10-26-2001, 12:46 PM What I'm paying for and what I'm actually getting is two different answers... (d@mn Verizon)
I paid for 768 Kbps down/128 Kbps up ($49.95/month)
I get about 305Kbps down and I don't know the up. And I'm not that far from the main DSL switch.. that's the funny part - not even a mile away. And telephone wriring inside the apt are new.
I wonder what I'd get if I upgraded to the 1.5M line instead...
BTW, did I tell you that I love my connection? :)

Yeah, it's about the same for me. I'm starting to get fed up with Verizon myself. My upstream is usually around 96k which I can live with, but a lot of the time I won't even get 256k down although I'm paying for 768k.
cyansmoker 10-26-2001, 04:31 PM I have a DSL connection here in California, with a very nice family-run company called Surfcity, I pay $49 for 768/128 ADSL, and I actually get something like 600Kps which is great.
I also have a cable-modem connection with Verizon (Gte (Americast (Worlwind ) ) ) and I may be the very first happy Verizon customer (*), since for the last few months I've constantly gotten speeds above 2Mps...yoohoo. I pay $41/mo but I would pay more if I didn't also pay for cable TV.
(*) I constantly read about people complaining about Verizon, and I also have my complaints but still...!

Well, speaking of running a web server...
as I wrote earlier I have a cable connection and a DSL connection.
DSL connection: it's part of the TOS that I will not run a server,
Cable connection: many many ports are filtered out, among them is port 80
I suspect it may by like this with many ISPs...

That's what they say about the dutch, being cheap.
I guess athome understands this and decided to go double dutch too. 16Kbps UP is a joke but we all now it doesn't hurt. only when you want to have a server at home (hehe) or do have to upload much.
I know that in Canada athome doesn't cap at all. Ok, let's move to Canada.
Oh, the guys that post T1 T3 connection speeds don't have this at home do they??? I mean, I will not bore you with the connection speeds our Universities have or the 256 Mbps every computer has at the NOB (dutch television, for transporting video material from one digibeta to another).
At school we have a T3... but it's damn slow, since they have so many users and servers on it....

think again buddy!
right now i'm capped at about 150kb/sec down and 50kb/sec upload, it's worst at peak times!
i'm on cable right now, and the dsl in my area is slower than a 56 k at peak times!
i'm not joking, last time i was at my friends house his goin at 5kb/sec and he had dsl!, and plus he signed a 6 month contract!
if you live in unpopulated areas, then you might get like 4mbps !
Alareach 10-27-2001, 04:10 PM Verizon business 7.1 MBS/768kbs DSL line

What kinda speeds do you get with the 7.1MBS?
Qwest has a similar offer here for $250/month and I am seriously considering it.
M. James 10-27-2001, 11:47 PM 28.8Kps - BEAT THAT! :)

I just moved about a year ago and had AtHome in Oregon for a long time, and they didn't cap my upload. Infact I often uploaded faster than I downloaded. Same goes now. I live in Washington and have AtHome again, and Download and upload at about 200-500KB a sec.

On a good day (actually.. a good night) I can test up to 3-4 MBS, but stay mostly in the 2's for download speed. Still pretty quick though. Upload speed is about 500-700 kbs normally.

rockergrrl 10-29-2001, 03:29 PM Verizon here in Florida doesn't offer a 7.5M line...
Business is just like the residential.. .but with static IPs... and cost about $15 more on each plan...

I hate u ;) I am one of those who voted for 64kbps :(
ProSam 10-30-2001, 05:22 AM I get AT&T Cable up here in Western Massachusetts. But I'm not really sure what my connection is. I think it's 128 down the other I don't know.
Is there a way I can find out, other than calling the company up?
muppie 10-30-2001, 05:47 AM it's probably easier to just call them... maybe you get put on hold for a couple of minutes... and then you can find out.... or they should also put it on the bill...
rockergrrl 10-30-2001, 12:12 PM Use this to check:
http://webservices.cnet.com/bandwidth/
I just clocked in at 305.2kbps and I paid for 768kbps...
I think I'm going to call Verizon and bitch at them.... Grrrrr....
iBusinessLawyer 10-30-2001, 12:58 PM The CNET test servers tend to be on the slow side. I typically get much faster results from the Speakeasy servers. They've got several in different locations, e.g., http://wdc.speakeasy.net (D.C.), http://nyc.speakeasy.net (NYC), and http://chi.speakeasy.net (Chicago). Use one closest to you to determine your top speeds.
Also, tweaking RWIN and MTU settings can dramatically alter DSL/cable performance. If you have not already, go to http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks, take their tweak test, and follow their recommendations (including, if they suggest it, downloading a great freeware utility, "DrTCP," that enables you to change these settings without mucking around in your registry).
Good luck!

rockergrrl 10-30-2001, 01:26 PM Ok now with DSL Reports, I'm getting 562kbps/136kbps...
I called Verizon the other day and asked them up upgrade me to the next package up, 1.5mbps, etc.
Wonder if that will do better... :)
LinuxGroup 10-30-2001, 01:34 PM I sysnc up at 1.5mps (DSL) per the router, but download at around 200kbs

I got this from there:
** Speed 1331(down)/285(up) kbps **
(At least 26 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.
Is that good, from cable I mean.
swissfreak 10-31-2001, 04:15 AM 512 kbps downstream / 256 kbps upstream
