I was going to help my friend transfer a domain name that he registered through register.com and just found out it costs $200 to transfer away

With such high registration fees, its amazing that place is still gets business but $200 to transfer? Jebuss...

$200 is for a in house transfer. If you transfer out to another registrar you pay the gaining registrar's fees.

yes, register.com not charge any fee when you transfer domain to another registrar. You only need to pay your new registrar.

It never amazes me more when there are actually people who are shoving their own customers away! With this outrageously high ownership transfer fee, they are not discouraging OWNERSHIP transfers but encouraging REGISTRAR transfers which basically accomplish similar results, except that they lose more and more customers. Are people in Register.com really THAT silly? Or they simply don't care because they know very well that at $35 per name year, they are not going to compete with the rest of the market (except perhaps NetSol) anyway.

Take a look at their profit margin. Even with overhead they probably clear $20 per domain at $35. I guess their Business Model doesn't take into consideration customer satisfaction & loyalty.
