View Full Version : multiple control panels
phobeas 10-24-2001, 10:28 PM This is my first post and I hope I don't look like a complete idiot but here goes :
Is there a way to use more than one control panel on a single server? I currently have a dedicated server with plesk installed which I love. Unfortunately, some of the users on my server are now requesting control panel access but 99% of them don't like plesk. I was looking into installing the beta version of webcp, but I don't know if this will cause any problems considering I want to continue using plesk to administer sites.
This is where my thoughts start getting jumbled, so lets just leave it at that, any help would be awesome!

ComplexMind 10-25-2001, 10:20 AM I'd say you were asking for trouble using more than one CP on the same 'system'. There are two main things you need to consider:
1) If your control panels include functionality for customer administration/billing/invoicing, then the two are not going to be compatible.
2) Depending on how the CP is modelled, configuration may be done entirely differently in the two systems. This opens the door to more inconsistencies than you can shake a stick at. For example, some CPs store config information in LDAP directories, wheras some edit config files directly, and expect those config files to be in a specific format (eg using comments for parsing control). If two CPs are expecting different config file contents, then you will probably find that one breaks the other...
IMHO it's not really worth the hassle... Get another server and put WebCP on it ;)
NetDotHost 10-25-2001, 11:59 AM I am not sure if this is possible, it is just a thought..... But, here goes......
Could you not use something like freevsd to setup multiple "virtual server" environments... and then install different CPs on each virtual server? I have no idea if this is actually possible, so would somebody that has more knowledge on this subject comment on it?
Good Luck to you.
Mike.
ComplexMind 10-26-2001, 06:20 AM It depends on a few factors:
If the scripts need root access to run (scary prospect) then you may need to be 'clever' to get them working in a VPS. You'll need someone who knows how freeVSD works with good admin skills and maybe some help from the CP developers. This could be especially difficult if the CP is closed source - it all depends how helpful the CP developers are.
For the reasons I outlined in my last post you would probably need to avoid using the built-in freeVSD administration protocol altogether in VPSs that have a 3rd party CP.

While it is most likely possible, it would only work if you did not use the 2 control panel to do the same job in 2 different ways (i.e have a few domains on one and a few domains on another panel)
Most Control Panel will regenerate the system files quite often, so a change made by one would be erased by the other.
So... yes, you can do it. Find another GPL cp to use, adapt them ;)
Not very usefull IMHO

Why not.
If you have root access, you can uninstall plesk and install whatever software you want.
smartmlp 12-14-2001, 09:06 PM Yes but Rackshack installs alot os plesk things./.. like things that tie with Plesk.

Just curious. What don't they like about plesk? What have they used that they liked better?
smartmlp 12-18-2001, 08:26 PM uhhh.. Plesk has a bad layout and is missing alot of external tools an features. Plesk is a nightmare to move to if you are a cpanel user.

Are you one of jason's customers? Is that why you don't like plesk on his servers?
