are mobliles in france or the US cheaper? Can both of them work in england if I were to put a 02 sim card in?

Are you looking for service or just a phone? I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find one at a thirft store that takes sim cards, or e-bay. ;)

For a phone to work in the UK (if it was originally intended for the US market) I believe it has to be tri-band. The Nokia 6310 is a good example of a tri-band phone. I use that very phone myself, and on every trip to the US from the UK it has worked without problems, even automatically connecting to whatever network had the strongest signal.

Yes, you'll be able to put a UK SIM in and it should work fine.

As for whether or not they're any cheaper, that's debatable. Is it worth shipping a phone from the US to the UK? I doubt I could be bothered!

Im not sure where its cheaper but as long as its an unlocked gsm phone that operates on the frequency your provider uses, it should accept your sim card.

Phones will be quite a bit cheaper in europe than in the USA (mainly because your new models are our old ones)

Make sure you'll buy a GSM with at least the 900 and 1800 frequency.

If you buy it from Europe, make sure that it is unlocked and the frequency settings as diederik said. Otherwise, the phone will not work in the US. The current providers of GSM service in the US are T-Mobile, Cingular (not in all areas), and ATT Wireless, which actually was just acquired by Cingular.

fyi, t-mobile runs at 1900mhz, cingular and at&t runs at 1900mhz and 850mhz.

Not everything. Some software/tech goods are (Photoshop is $1100 instead of $600, studio MX 2004 edu is $750 instead of $390)

..but mobile phones are one thing that is not, because all the major manufacturers are based in europe.
