View Full Version : Potential $999 Colo Play
headsurfer 10-24-2001, 08:32 PM As we get closer to a new facility with lots of room, I'm interested in your thoughts on the following:
19" Rack
24 PT Switch
8 Pt Master switch remote reboot system
Dual redundant 20 Amp power
10 MB Cogent Circuit
$999 per month plus a one time start up fee
Above with 19" CABINET instead, $1250/month
Of course, full generator backup plus redundant UPS systems. Climate controlled systems, etc. Carrier class facility!
Any thoughts???

dektong 10-24-2001, 08:44 PM That deal is good, but currently I (and some of us) am not sure whether cogent is good ... Nobody seems to have convinced me (or some of us) that cogent is really good. I suppose when you see the deal include 10 mbps link you really mean that we can fully use all the 10mbps link (meaning up to 3200GB/mo, in/out traffic?).
do you do smaller colo? Like individual server or 1/4 rack, 1/2 rack (please say you do :) )
all the best for you ...
cheers,

headsurfer 10-24-2001, 08:58 PM It seems that everyone that typically bad mouths Cogent, there are a few on these boards, don't do business with Cogent.
Cogent does have a little extra latency on their network but with the acquisition of Net Rail that gets better every day. We'll soon be putting up a server accessible to the public that will allow you to see for yourself.
If the proof is in the pudding, this will be the proof that Cogent is actually OK.
Try looking at www.alldanzradio.com which is a Cogent customer.

dektong 10-24-2001, 09:03 PM headsurfer,
I hope you don't get me wrong .... you can search this forum and see that I have never bad mouth cogent. In fact, I would really love to get cogent bandwith (in the near future if possible). But I would love to be able to test it myself. I don't care what some people say, but if I can convince myself it's good then I will say it's good (since they are actually too good to be true). Now ... how about my other questions? Also, will you ever consider smaller colo or even individual server(s) colo?
cheers,
headsurfer 10-24-2001, 09:59 PM Ooppssss ... ever had something just not come out the right way?
I in no wway intended to insult you or refer to your comments... I was speaking in generalities only.
I was VERY skeptical of the Cogent deal. It was at least a year from the first time I talked with them at Internet World before I was a convert. I could kick myself real hard fro missing out on their pre-launch deals. :(
Did you try www.alldanzradio.com ????
I don't know yet. I'm just trying to judge interest. If there is no interest from our existing customers or on this forum.... we probably won't do it. On the other hand, when we get a lot of response, we get to it if we can.
This forum, as well as teh RS forum, are great places to bounce ideas and such.

Interest? Don't worry about that ... I believe a lot of us have a lot of interest with colocation in your facility ... Let's put cogentco aside, with your current bandwith provider I am still more than willing to pay $99/mo for 300GB (forget about the RAQ4) for colocation. But then again, I am not sure whether you are overselling your bandwith or what ....
traceroute to alldanzradio.com from my server at VDI seems to show that cogentco has peering with above.net (as we know already). traceroute from visualroute.visualware.com seems to suggest that cogentco also has peering with verio (CMMIIW). ping response seems OK from one of my server ...
cheers,

ffeingol 10-24-2001, 10:36 PM I would not be interested in a whole rack, but I'm with dektong. something like $99 for 1U and I'd seriously consider it.
Frank
dherman76 10-24-2001, 10:58 PM That would be a great deal as well!

does that mean, that you can install 24 x 1U SERVER? but just 8 with remote power control?
thats a nice deal, but what about managing the server? do you reboot the other for us? can we access the colo-room 24/7?
headsurfer 10-25-2001, 09:33 AM You guys are like our CAO, Chief Accounting officer. I'm up here at the 100 FT view trying to see if a concept has any interest and you guys, like him, want ALL the gory details.
The long an dshort of it is, in reply to most of your questions, "I haven't decided yet".
That's good as you can mold my opinions.
One thing is for sure, with the colo deal, is that remote reboot power ports will be a requirement. We've had enough trouble with reboots and it costs a fotrune just to handle these.
I'm working with another remote power management company to make remote reboots availabto to all of our server customers on a reasonable cost basis, that is, cheaper that we currently have posted on our web site.
Robert
ffeingol 10-25-2001, 10:03 AM Well your CAO (I thought they were CFO's :D) would like our idea of coloc by the U. If you offered the same $99 per u (or something similar) for us "little" guys, you would get $2376 in revenue per rack, instead of $999.
It's just a guess, by I would think you'd get more interest in selling by the U, not the rack. People who want to buy a whole rack will want physical access to do their work. That would limit you to customers in TX (near your data center).
People like me (I run a few websites and just need a dedicated server) don't need physical access to the data center. I would just ship you a server and some spare parts (if possible) and then pay you for any hands on that needs to be done (install memory, new drive etc.).
Just my opinion.
Frank
headsurfer 10-25-2001, 01:20 PM I got it really bad, we've got a CFO and a CAO. Go figure. Me, I just think it's a conspiracy by the CFO to play golf more often!!! :)
palmtree 10-25-2001, 02:38 PM I know I would be interested in 1/4, 1/2 and full racks, but unfortunately I'm not in Texas and as mentioned above, most would probably want access to their equipment if they have many servers.

ResellerFind 10-26-2001, 03:41 AM $999 a month??
Is that a real deal?
Gee...
For that price I could get a hooker.
NetXL 10-26-2001, 04:02 AM And I could buy a new computer for that. What's your point ResellerFind? lol
They have put forward a potential offer, by the looks of it a very good offer. Even thouigh the bandwidth isn't what most people would say is best, you still get a full rack and 10mb of bandwidth, which is fantastic for the price you pay if you aren't fussed about Cogent.
ResellerFind 10-26-2001, 04:06 AM I guess so. The price did seem quite high and at first I thought it was a Type-O. (thought it was $99 a month instead of $999)
Oh well... :-)
Except for the bandwidth, it's a prety good deal.
NetXL 10-26-2001, 04:11 AM What's wrong with the bandwidth? You're getting 3,300gb for $999 including a full rack. I havn't ever used Cogent before but from what I have heard it isn't the best quality. This offer would still be ideal if you're a big download site, or if you're usng it just to store backup servers or even for audio/video streaming.
