Hi,

I know this is kinda weird... but I figured I'd post...

In the next couple months, I'm looking to revamp my office... And I'm looking for a good office chair (brand, etc).

I'm looking for a chair that in comfortable. I have a bad back (torn ligament near my waist) - so I'm look for something where I can sit comfortably. Wide seat (I like to get comfortabe - legs crossed, etc :) ). And a kooshie seat is a must.

I'm looking to spend the most $200 on a chair, but I haven't found any in my price range - all the nice ones are at least $500.

If I could fit a La-z-boy up to my desk, I would... :) But I don't think the IRS would think that was appropriate if they came unannounced for an office audit. :D

Any suggestions??

And if you can, please include a website address if they have one online, etc.

Thanks!!
Tonya

Well take a trip down to some of the office places like staples, office max, etc... or any others you have nearby and just go on a sitting spree until you find "THE ONE". When it comes to opinions, they can often give you a little direction, but it really just widdles down to your own preferences and how the chair fits you. There's a chair out there for everyone, you just have to find that match. :)

Yeah I actually tried doing that last weekend.... But they only had a few chairs... mostly cheap ol secratary chairs -- like the one I have now... for $30.... And it kills my back...

Herman miller has a mesh type fabric which contours to the shape of yourback and are about thebest out there and look cool in a tech environment, but our like 1000.00 :( you can get them on ebay for 250-500.00 slightly used from ex dot coms, i noticed office depot had a chair with the mesh back to but i didnt sit in it, it was only like 100.00 - 200.00

hmmmm.... I think my husband would kill me if I would a $500 chair... even though I could write it off next year... :)

But I don't think la-z-boy would fit well with the IRS...

Even though my back and bum would thank me for it....

I wen to their site, and see that there was a office furniture place here in town.... But I wont be buying one until March or so (tax return check -- it pays to have kids... :) )

Maybe I can con my husband in saying yes to it... :) Since it will be my butt sitting in it all day long...

Well I recently ugraded from a errr... $30 *worth* (paid more) computer chair to one of the $49 leather ones (on sale from $79) from Office Max. They also seem to run specials on the $130 ones for $79 too. It is certainly better than what I had but I've noticed that the actual padding must be foam and thus it kinda squishes more than it should.

The Herman Millers can be found at used office funiture shops (long time ago I got one for my father), and really do have superior padding (almost a thick gel like padding). Worth it if you can schwinnng it IMHO.

For $50 my leather chair isn't bad. Mine is something like this one (http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&expansionOID=-536879623&prodBlockOID=54784).

Oh man ... $1000 chair! My chair is only $20, very thin cushion, especially for a big person like me. The back seat has broken ... My a** complains a lot when I sit in this chair. I want to get a better chair, but $1000 is a lot ... I even think $100 is too much for my a** :D

people, what make you think your butt worth that much???? It's just a butt! It's designs with more meat and much less nerve systems on them so that it can suffer a bit more! I am sitting on a rock solid (read: hard surface almost no cushion) seat and my butt is complaining a bit and I just tell them to be quiet!

cheers,

Is it just me or do they have two sale prices? Was $700-something, on sale for $600-something and lower for $400-something...

*Those* chairs however, are the bomb.

rockergrrl
10-25-2001, 11:20 AM
Well for me, its more than my tushie that needs comforting... its my back that needs the comfort more than anything.

The chair I have now (bought before I hurt my back) only has middle back support, and my lower back isn't supported at all. So a $30 isn't cutting it -- because most $30 chairs don't have the support I need for my lower back (right above my waist). So basically full back support.

I have 4 or so months to try and pursuade my husband into letting me get an Aeron chair... :D

It may be $600 now.... but next tax time, it will be $600 that I could write off... :D

And I sit at my desk all day long (well try to -- this chair wrecks havoc on my back - so I have to take breaks) .... So this might be a blessing.... a $600 blessing... ;)

yeah I was a bit confused by that ????
maybe the shipping truck is very expensive ????

Rockergrrl
well just do some persuading you will be very very happy ;)
your back will thank you ;)
tell him it will make you less tired adn crancky at the end of hte day ;)
(assuming you get tired and crancky)
figure how long you sit in the chair to how much it is its a great deal really for how ergonomic they are.

rockergrrl
10-25-2001, 02:23 PM
Yeah I'm usually tired and cranky... mostly because of my 20 month old son... he's become and pain in the arse lately... Prefering to run around naked and tearing off his diaper every chance he can get.... and staining the carpet... grrr...

Duct tape isn't working to keep on his diaper...

Usually when I got to bed, I'm sleeping within 5 minutes of putting my head down.... sometimes less...

When I started this I was sitting in a wood chair. My back hurt and work was a pain. Went to a used Steelcase place and picked out a $250 chair that I liked. Air cushioned type. Best investment I made. Back hasn't hurt since.

my dad got this little back thingy for chairs that massages your back it's cool it has a heat feature and it inflates and deflates as you like, it even works in the car (where it is now)
it was only like $100 cdn, i think that if you can't afford those expensive chairs you should get that, but i already have a good chair

p.s. i would never spend more than 100 on a chair, nevermind 1000, i would rather get a new computer!
heck i'll trade my chair and computer for a new computer!

damn, this thread is long for a thread on chairs !!

im sitting in an office with a "Tensa"-"Konig+Neurath" chair, their web page is at:

www.kn-international.co.uk

the office seats about... hmm probably 200-300 per floor and its all open plan, not sure now much the chairs were each but i think someone said about £300-£400 each, its a brand new office block so everything is immaculate.

Well, anyways, dunno where to buy them, from, i got mine from some stationary suppliers in the UK, at home its one of those tall back leather things.

BTW - YES its very important, not just for your @ss but more for your back, legs, arms and neck, the position of your butt can afect you in many unseen ways :p lol

This is a bit old... but I thought I'd jump in....

I bought my chair called kneelsit www.kneelsit.com probably almost a year now... I think they cost $600 - $800 ?? forgot...

I've had terible back problem and as I sit on my computer all day and all night I think this is one expense / investment I have to make.

Aeron chair sure looks nice.... I would love to try it do they have any distributor in Australia?

I wish I could use something like that, but I have a bad knee also (high school basketball injury - can't put much pressure on it - and I wont get into what happens if I do... )

Just gotta find the right chair... Aeron is looking better and better everyday...

muppie
10-30-2001, 12:17 PM
With kneelsit you don't actually use your knee to support your body (it would be painful if you do). You put your shin on the support pad and leave the knees above it.

The chair is bulky but I won't last long sitting on a normal chair anymore... and I'm only young... :(

I'd love to try aeron chair... just to see how well it feels...

There's another chair from Australia (ship internationally) www.bionomic.com.au I became friends with their web master and we had a deal for him to send me one of the chairs in return for something. I did my end of the deal, he never reappear on line anymore... :( I guess I learned about Internet and honesty that day... (we were friends for months and months!!)

For your information... it's not just the chair.... have a look at this web site:

http://www.openerg.com/dse/setup.html

For those with Aeron chair.... could you ... describe it to me how it feels ?? to your back... over a very long period of time?

Does it enforce good sitting posture? (Coz I tend to slouch...)

Honu
10-30-2001, 12:42 PM
Aloha
you can buy them ;)
you justusually do it through people that sell them through there design business or mail order
they are great for comfort considered one of the best task chairs
a good springy light feeling I like how it breathes as Maui can be kinda warm
if you slouch you slouch though it can help you not slouch by feeling better and supporting the correct areas they are def teh most comfy chair I have ever say in ;)

I don't have an Aeron chair, but I've sat in one and the best thing about it is that it lets you position yourself in just the right place. Quite an interesting chair really and if I could somehow slip it into the kitchen without the wife knowing it, I'd get one.

I tend to believe they don't make 'em like they used to. As a result I sit on a 100 year old silky oak, hand carved, highback chair. :)

The steel springs under my backside are close to 6 inches deep, and have now crafted themselves to fit my , well you know, perfectly. I can sit in this thing for 12 hours at a time with little complaint.

I had an Aeron chair at my last job. It's a bit hard to describe. The mesh is nice - specially in the summer since it's cool. The chair encourages you to keep both feet on the ground since it has high, hard plastic sides along the seat that make it hard to sit with crossed legs. That's probably better for you posture but I like to sit on my legs.

It does encourage you to sit up as well. There's an adjustable lower back support that's very nice. You can set the height and chose one of two depths. The adjustable arms are also nice. You can lower them if you like to get yourself right up to the desk and still keep the seat height where you want it. The swinging arms was a bit much. I liked the fact that you could adjust them but you can't lock them in place and so they move when you push or pull on em.

The biggest downside was that the mesh tends to tear up your pants. Specially if you keep your wallet in your back pocket like many men do. I switched my wallet to my front pocket which is better for your back anyway.

They're nice chairs, but there's no way you're going to slip one in unnoticed. They tend to draw a lot of attention with their distinctive look.

Are the mesh strong and does it look like it's going to last for a long time? Or is it easy to break...?

For this kind of money they better last a very long time
