We all know what the meaning of SPAM is, right? Right. There was some argument on another thread a while back about some things being a legit form of contact and should not be considered SPAM.

What do you think, the email:
----------------------------------------

Hello.
85% of all Internet surfers are directed by search engines to Web sites. This
creates the most highly targeted traffic in the history of advertising! Top
placement in search engines can be the super powerful traffic solution your Web site
needs.

We will provide you with a FREE evaluation of your Web site,
http://www.whatever.net, which will include a report of your
keyword placements in the major search engines for the search words that are most
important to your Web site. A professional evaluator will then complete an analysis
of your site and notify you if there is any 'search engine hostile' content.

Absolute :spam: if the mail is unsolicited by the receivers.

Spam has 2 different 'types' of meanings, depending on how you look at it. There's UCE and UBE.

Of UCE:
is it Unsolicited?: Yes
is it Commercial?: Yes
is it email?: Duh!

Then there's UBE - unsolicited bulk email - usually discussions of UBE are at a provider level when someone spews through a providers smtp relay. Could be, doesn't necessarily need to be.

Greetings:

Unsolicited = spam in my book.

And, I am one of those who pays for a spamcop.net account; and, will report every single spam message received.

Those which are fraudulent, child porn, or that nature are also reported to uce@ftc.gov

Thank you.

Under the law anything that arrives in your inbox that was not as a direct request by you to be sent is unsolicited therefore spam.

It is really that simple now.

It's not spam, if you have opt in to receive "marketing offers"
which makes it no longer Unsolicited

If it is out of the blue, it's spam.

Now, if you got it because you signed up for a marketing list and opted-in - then it's not.

Of course, one interesting technique you can use when signing up for various free services or online discussions is to setup an aliase e-mail address naming that service.

That way, if you later get spam even if you opted out - you know who the source is. :)

(unless of course the email is harvested off some online discussion by 'bots)

with regard to the email you show - complete spam.

The way I see it - since the entire email other than the word "hello" and the signature - it's a complete ad.

Obviously spam with a pathetic attempt of personalization...
