Anyone use Tera-Byte's Virtual Server plan?
Doesn't look like a bad plan:

Any thoughts on Tera-Byte .. uptime .. downtime .. support?

Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks.

Wow 18 views and no reply.

I guess this is not a popular company or plan...

It is a new offering by them (relatively) and you only gave it just over 2 hours. Also the VPS market isn't exactly the most discussed thing on the forums, so I'd assume that there aren't many members (compared to other methods of hosting: virtual shared, dedicated, colo, etc.), using VPServers. Some, just not enough to get you an answer in 2 hours, and maybe none at tera.

Thanks Chicken...

Guess I couldn't wait ..

Anyway, I am still welcoming any feedback and this time I promise to hold out more than 2 hours.

Thanks again.

Im on Tera-Host now using there Virtual Server packge.

I think overall its pretty good, it basically acts like a dedicated server. You get root telnet access and your the only person on that server, so it seems.

Doing a top command shows that there is 128mb of memory dedicated to your virtual server and you have 2G of space. Unfortuanalty this 2G of space, is as is, 2G of entire space, so once you take out system files, youve got alot less left.

My main grunge about this system is that it is so Arcayik, its runnig Redhat 6.0, and the libraries are someone what non-existant as a general rule, or so out of date they are useless.

I had to install mysql server myself, and to do this I had to update the GCC compiler which depended on a hole lot of other libraries, and is slowly eating away my space. Also its using perl 5.00x so I had to install Perl 5.6.0 myself, which required yet another load of crap, and again eat away at my hard drive space.

But over all, the system is good, but I know im gonna need more space very soon, I just hope that tera-byte can help me out with this :)

Anything else anyone wants to know aobut this sever package just ask away :)

okie so you can install anything right? and delete/edit any files? like can you "accidentally" delete the /bin folder?

: )

so the 2GB is inclusive of the system files? how much space exactly do you have for usage?

Tera-Byte's Virtual Server plan is running off Ensim's VDS technology. It runs off RH 6.1. The new release that is due out within a few weeks - months, will support 7.1. The install usually takes up 300 -500 MBs of space. It depends on what your provider drops in there.

MySQL is wrapped with the software. The install is easy, I do not know why TB just didn't add it for you. The rest of the Ensm providers do.

MySQL is apparently suppposed to be installed, mabey a mistake, well I had to install it myself, I did get it working, using the latest mysql from the src, well version 3.x not 4.x. It was just alot of hard work, now ive come across something else which is even more hard work, not to mention my isp dropped my connection just as I was working on something that would have meant I can not get back in once the telnet session was dropped, so im rite up the **** creek now ! :-/

Top is the command where you can see processes, you can re-nice them kill them etc.

You can also see the swap space usage and the memory usage. This is actually a snapshot of your /proc

The issue is not the RAM so much but, usually, the CPU speed and how many clients exist on the server (CPU/clients ratio).

In technologies where you do have a pseudo root access then you can have even as much as 200 clients in one server :)

Imagine having 0.5 of CPU time under server load. Wouldn't this be really fun?

On the other hand, there are other technologies where there are no more than 10-15 maximum clients using the server resources. In this case the quality of service (if they know what they are doing) is really good :)

olm.com
superb.net
forsite.com

These are some of the larger Ensim providers.
