Why is it that a p4 intel prescott with 1 mb cache is cheaper than a xeon dp 2.4 ? Which one is better
And can someone give a quick rundown of itanium, prescott, xeon mp/dp (other than mp has more cache) and umm amd xp/mp
Heres more specific
Intel Xeon MP
Intel Xeon DP
Intel Itanium
Intel Itanium 2
Intel Prescott
AMD XP
AMD DP
Intel PIII (Dual or single)
Intel P4 with HT
These processors in terms of dual processing, etc, price/value, performance

is the dp xeon, typicially just refered to as "Xeon" ?
i know the mp is "technologicially advanced compared to the regular xeon.

You gotta remember, the Prescott does worse clock for clock, in most tests, compared to it's Northwood counterpart.
I would assume the Xeon MP would be for more than 2 cpus. Given that, i'll assume DP is Dual processor? Itanium's aren't all that great. They don't perform very well at all, and need everything compiled for them. With that in mind, they still perform badly.
Athlons are pretty cheap, even for a MP rig. If you need to save money, a dual p3 or athlon would do well, but a MP Xeon would rape them all.

Hello,
(I am a dedicated server newbee)
I am considering getting a (cheap) dedicated server at
ctn1.net in France (php/mysql) as it comes out to be almost
the same price as most virtual private servers I can see (that are rare in Europe btw).
I am not expert at all. I don't need a huge hard drive or a very big bandwidth (yet ;) nor do I want/need a very expencive solution for now. I am concerned about being able
to support many simultaneous queries and connections to my database without fearing crashing or unavailability...
I am not sure wich server I should consider between :
PIII 733Mhz 512Mo 120Go IDE 9,1 Go SCSI
Duron 1.4Ghz 512Mo 40Go
Celeron 1.7Ghz 512Mo
Athlon XP1300 1024Mo 120Go
(see the cheaper offer at ctn1.net)
Wich server is best for my use? What is more important the CPU or Ram?
Thanks for any imput.

are you sure? AMD is cheaper, and has smaller clock speed (2200+ MP runs at 1.8Ghz) than Intel, but my tests showed that Intel is still behind AMD in terms of perfomance. Maybe stability - although AMD has no problems with this either.

M.

knowing what you plan to use the server for would be a big help, also if whatever your using it for will generate growing needs for storage, bandwidth or processor power. You listed servers which really have better uses for different applications

classified ads type website using php/mysql
with like 10 tumbnails pict. per page. I hope to get 2000 pages...
and perhaps 2000-5000 (more hopefully) unique visitors per day.
I believe a small dedicated server should be ok? (no music, video, forum, or big pictures)
Thanks
