View Full Version : scammed on ebay
gottoknow 02-27-2004, 02:19 AM I was scammed on ebay. Wow... I feel so bad. 1600 dollars down the drain. I should have suspected there was something wrong with the seller.
I browsed through and found a laptop I wanted. I send couple questions, then got a reply of whether or not I was actullay interested in buying the $3500 worth Dell latitude D800 laptop with all the best things it can have with networking router and warranty. I was hell yah! So, I told him I wanted it. He told me to send the money to Paris, France through Western Union. That the auction was because of a stock liquidation and that he needed to get rid of the laptop as soon as possible. He told me he didn't accept paypal because he was having his account upgraded. I should have suspected that it was a scam right there, but the deal was so good, that I blinded myself. I asked him all sorts of questions like if we could use escrow. But, he said no, that he was in a rush to sell it. I really wanted the laptop and I never used wester union before, so I decided to give it a try.
After I sent the money, the person stopped replying to my e-mails. Shucks... 1500 dollars for the laptop 92 dollar for the transaction goes down the darn drain.
I just felt like writing here because I just need to let some emotions out. I HATE THOSE DAMN SCAMMERS!
Well, I guess I learned my lesson the hard way...
LinuxAdmin 02-27-2004, 02:35 AM OMG OMG I am so sorry to hear that, my heart is with you hun.
That guy will experience Karma, what a jerk.
Sorry babez
Hosemeyer 02-27-2004, 02:35 AM Check with western union to see if you can cancel it...
Second, although, not as bad as you, I was scammed $150
How long ago did you send it out?
csparks 02-27-2004, 02:38 AM It sounds like you had the warnings but just didn't listen to them.
Next time think twice.
Once bitten, twice shy ;)
RHShawn 02-27-2004, 07:06 AM If somethings to good to be true it probably is.
Lock that phrase in your memory and never forget it.
AL-Benjamin 02-27-2004, 07:48 AM report it to western union so he can't recieve any more money via them and report it to the police. You may well be covered to a degree.
oh, and doesn't ebay provide some form of buyer protection? Contact ebay also, as they will have contact details!
MatthewN 02-27-2004, 07:51 AM I doubt WU would give any money back because it really isnt anything to do with them. You sent someone money... and he received it and their job is done. But he might not have collected it yet. Maybe reporting it would help though.
Doesnt ebay have a protection policy against this happening? I think the next step would be to check out with ebay what can be done as I can imagine your not the first to have this amount without receiving the goods.
Torith 02-27-2004, 12:51 PM I am so sorry for you :(. Though a while back someone tryed the same thing (though person lived in AZ) he said he was in a hurry that he needs the money fast I said well what about paypal he said "no" He said WU so I was like I wont do it through WU because if something happends. He said "Your a scammer if you dont do it I am going to tell everyone about you" *shakes head* why cant people earn their money the hard way like everyone else. :(
RossH 02-27-2004, 03:20 PM Well ebay does offer some sort of buyer protection last time I checked. Though it looks the buyer (gottoknow) didn't use ebay to do the transaction. He sent the seller an email and recieved a reply and outside of ebay he sent the seller the money through Western Union. Call Western Union asap and see if you can put a stop to the payment or atleast report it. Then contact ebay and notify them of what happened.
RossH 02-27-2004, 03:25 PM I did some research for you and found this on the WU (western union) page:
What can I do if I suspect fraud or am a victim of fraud?
Contact your State Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs if you are uncertain or suspicious of a telephone, mail or email solicitation.
If you feel you have been the victim of fraud, you can access the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) at http://www.ifccfbi.gov/ or contact the Federal Trade Commission through their web site at http://www.ftc.gov/.
But unless he hasn't picked it up yet I think your out some cash. I'm really sorry for your loss :(
Hostlead 02-27-2004, 05:54 PM Did you tick the box on the westernunion sheet so that he has to show his ID when picking up the money?

I belive that because the transaction was made outside ebay, ebay is not liable.
but take a look at this,
http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/isgw-fraud-alert.html
Wouldnt hurt to fill out a Fraud Alert.
creepcolony 02-27-2004, 08:11 PM i think only buyers who pay with paypal on ebay are protected

NickRac 02-27-2004, 09:40 PM Call the local police in the area which you sent payment.
I was scammed for a laptop in the summer and after months of waiting the local police there tracked the guy down and I ended up getting every penny back, with interest.
