Hi y'all !

A have 2 raqs at TB.
Since i'm in the Netherlands my customers wants to register .nl names wich is done by the SIDN.

before you can register a name it checks the DNS records (so you have to setup DNS first).
Now there's my problem, i use TB's Control panel to enter my DNS records.
Now for some reason it is often that the SIDN does not find the records on all 3 nameservers (it detects them automaticly  ), or even find the nameservers at all, when a "dig" from my own server show the records and the NS are there.

Now to make a long story short (to late :D ), is there any alternative DNS service i can use, i don't mind paying for it, as long as it is absolutely 101% reliable.

I came across "mydomain.com", does anyone have any experiences with them ?

do a search on here for them. i've seen them reccommended often, and everyone seems to have good things to say about them.

and, their uptime seems to be pretty good.

i did :)

and i found out that the owner of this service is a member of wht, wich ofcourse speaks for him :D

for those that are intrested i also found "ultradns", "worldwidedns", and "zoneedit".

if anyone have experiences with any of these i'd be glad to hear about it.

i also found out that this topic is in the wrong forum, it should have been in technical, sorry 'bout that Chicken, i'm so hooked at this corner of WHT, that i forget sometimes there are other forums on this board :cartman:

No problem, you mentioned Cobalt, and I didn't even notice, heh. Moved now.

I've used zoneedit and ultradns before. No problems there either. I thought ultradns had gone to a paid service, but eh, I haven't had to use these external ones in som long I can't recall (that and I'm getting old... whaaaaa? ehhh?)

I've used Zoneedit, they work great. There's a 5 domains limit, though.
After that you'll have to pay.
They even provide branded nameservers for hosting companies ;)

I decided to go with zoneedit.

Although it costs serious dollars, its cheaper then ultradns.

I have one question about zoneedit in combination with a cobalt raq (please move the thread back to "Cobalt :D ).

If i add a MX record, do i have to add "mail.mydomain.com" as a mailserver, or will "mydomain.com" be enough ?

And do i have to add a MX record to deliver mail to "www.mydomain.com" or is this handled by the raq ?

Thanks !

hi folks,

Yeah, I run everydns.net -- I can't say we have 100% uptime -- we had a serious outtage about a month ago where over about 5 shaky days of connectivity we were down for about 4 hours total. We're trying to find a company to let us stick a 1U but most people are cheap and just say no.

It's really sad actually how I offer this free service (to a lot of people) and not one colo place will step forward and just say "if you bring the hardware I can give you 1U and a little bandwidth" -- either way, we're still looking. For the time being I can only promise "AS MUCH UPTIME" as possible. I'd say four hours in six months is pretty good but I always shoot for 100%, as impossible as that is.

Also, if you have questions, just email me or support@everydns.net and I'll get back to you.

thanks,
davidu

David, i like your initiative.

Its just that i can't see how people ever gonna trust someone who's gonna give away something for free without seeing how this person will benefit from it sooner or later. Or maybe on one bad day pull the plug on the whole operation because your tired of it.

Trust is essential for a DNS service.

Maybe you should make it more like a organisation (unitedwebhostingprovidersinsearchforreliabledns.org :) )

Anyone who would like to join your DNS service pays a contribution of something like $50,- or $100,- a year, and will be able to add all the records he needs.
You'll still have a non-profit dns operation, but with a proper funding, and people see how its gonna last.
Ofcourse you'll have to make a organization where different people have the responsebility of seperated servers, to make sure someone who's girlfriend just broke up, won't bring the entire operation down.

well just a thought....
:cartman:

Please let me be clear that i think its great what you're doing !

It really is FREE and I'm really NOT going anywhere so people shouldn't worry.

I encourage donations but the reason I started everydns.net was because I had no way to get free nameservice. I don't do this for companies, I do it for other geeks. The companies mostly freeride but some of them donate.

I hope _everyone_ donates but I can't force it.

Just my opinions I guess. ;-)

DavidU,

How much bandwidth do you need?

Depending on the amount, I may be able to hook you up!

PM me if you still haven't found a place!

(or maybe I should say "if you bring the hardware, we can give you 1u and a little bandwidth" :D )
