I think having a giant map with all the WHT users on it, and zoomable countries/states would be really neat. Any chance of one once the upgrades for Premium Members are working?

Joseph_M 02-26-2004, 07:21 PM Dan, that sort of project would be ridiculously expensive & time consuming to create. You'd have to program it with every town of every country in the world (for it to be accurate), and not everyone wants to give their town name! If you want to know where people are from, ask them! Artashes 02-26-2004, 07:31 PM That would definitely simplify the search for members for local WHT get-togethers... Dan L 02-26-2004, 08:16 PM Well, I do suppose that would be more involved than I thought.. doesn't DeviantArt have a link to some service that already does that? macdonaldp 02-26-2004, 09:10 PM Yes there is something like this. http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/guestmap/index.php alapo 02-28-2004, 05:26 PM Originally posted by Joseph_M Dan, that sort of project would be ridiculously expensive & time consuming to create. Or just use their IP address. There are databases of where certain IP's are from, and from that you can get a general idea of where WHTers are from. I think the idea sounds neat. However that bravenet thing pretty much does what the poster was looking for. Sheps 02-28-2004, 05:50 PM It isn't that hard. You don't need to program it with every town. You could set it up, so that users could zoom in on sections, and click their location. It wouldn't be 100% accurate, but it would give you a idea. Or you could look on the net for a database of places with coordinates. Relate them to coordinates on a image, and BAM! Not too hard either... Plus, this is what they are paying prohacker $1/day to do... :D |
