View Full Version : HELP!!! webhost choosing!
Pmd7176 10-22-2001, 09:15 PM Well.. Iam 14 years old and want a second website. I already have a Radiohead fansite (www.noalarmsweb.com) and pay $19 a month with OLM.
I want a personal site and I dont have much money. I need a new domain, cheap setup fees, no hidden costs, AT LEAST 50megs (2gigs bandwidth), no email accounts, not much customer support (i'll use olm's.. :)), and cgi/perl/php.. etcetera if possible.
i want to do this for around $10 a month. (the cheaper the better) I want to be able to pay via money order (like 3 months at a time)
I was looking at hostrocket.com and Pair.com.. any sugestions? any advice?
Thanks in advance,
Paul
P.S.- I would absolutely love some constructive critiscism on my website -www.noalarmsweb.com-www.noalarmsweb.com/paul

Dominic 10-22-2001, 09:46 PM I am a Hosting Matters customer and very happy with them...;)
http://hostmatters.com/plans.html
You will get less disk space & data transfer on Hosting Matters, but their server load is only 0.XX while others are 1-2 or 3...

Actually, *this* is the correct forum for asking about advice about hostrocket.com and Pair.com, and asking for suggestions. Hosts should not be telling you to post somewhere else (*ahem*).
We have a requests forum, though hosts might send you an offer (him email and PM is on), so expect that and search for them here if you want to know more about them.
Also, I'd search the forum for past comments about both hostrocket.com and pair.com (there have been quite a few about hostrocket at least).
happyhappy 10-23-2001, 03:07 AM I never really understood the server loads. What do they actually mean? What's the difference between 0.xx, 1, 2 ... I know the lower the better, but does that mean the site downloads faster?
I've got a really good host too. They're cheap, reliable and have a very informative, detailed customer support but I don't think they accept money order. I'm currently developing a gaming portal site (hopefully it'll grow real big) and they said that they'd sponsor me. They're that nice... I think that if you have a viable business plan, they'll take you under their wing at no cost to you (I'm not complaining :)). I think they're sponsoring a number of personal sites too, but I'm not too sure about that.
If you're interested in knowing who they are, send me a PM and I'll let you know. ;)
searched for: "Load Averages linux" in google and found the follwoing: http://www.reedmedia.net/misc/unix/load_average.html
Here it says for instance: w(1): "The load average numbers give the number of jobs in the run queue averaged over 1, 5 and 15 minutes."

Michelle69 10-23-2001, 11:52 PM Hi there,
I'll gladly recommend my host: F5Hosting (http://www.f5hosting.com)
They have a package in your price range and the support is fantastic. Have a look through their support forums, you can't go wrong.
Good luck!

Not meant maliciously, honest :-P
Rewdog 10-24-2001, 12:08 AM lol, i don't think being suspecious in the webhosting business is a bad thing ;) .
boxman 10-25-2001, 01:34 AM Getting back to the original question of the thread, I think Pair is the ideal host for this poster. I am not sure if they meet the price requirements, and I don't think Pair is everything for everyone.
But Pair offers a decent amount of freedom, good performance, lots of tools, and no baloney. They have no phone support, but so what in this case. (I find it rarely helps anyway -- rarely does anyone answer the phone for a shared hosting customer and know anything.)
I have been a pair customer for four years, and probably will be until death for personal projects and hobbies. My recent hunt for a windows host has made me appreciate pair more than ever.
helexia23 10-26-2001, 03:46 PM Hi,
I had an account with them and they switched me to one of their special accounts with no problem. I think all you have to do is ask.

Hedgehog 10-27-2001, 09:17 PM I do not have much money either, so I am using Hachour.net's services. They only charge $15.29 per YEAR. No hidden fees whatsoever and the support is excellent. By the way, you get 30 MB web space and a 1 GB transfer. I hardly use 1 MB for my web site... but hell it is only $15.29 /YEAR.

dektong 10-27-2001, 10:05 PM another supicious post from the first time poster? Hope not ...
Hedgehog, what is your URL hosted with them?
Heck ... I won't go to a host that depserate enough to give $15.29/yr hosting ... nay! I bought cokes more than that a month!
cheers,
