gilwe, if you can't find any host here...
do a search at FreeWebSpace.net (http://www.freewebspace.net).

Matt, when does F2S provide FREE domain hosting?

Freeservers.com will hosts domain names for free, but they in return they put a nice banner on your page. Although they do allow you to customize your banner in many ways and you can pay a fee of $9.95 (I think) a month to get rid of the banner. I used them before, they weren't bad, connection was fast. Although they did have a downtime of about 1 day when they had a Router go bad.

Also freedom2surf.com doesn't allow you to host your own domain name that I know of unless it's one of those features that I couldn't find in their free plan. However they also have a fee that you pay monthly which will allow you to be able to have your domain name there.

I found one http://www.freeservers.com but unfortunately there is no cgi-bin access. Gilwe if you find one with cgi access could you please post it here, I'm ok with banner advertising.

Oh yeah www.portland.co.uk allows you to host your own domain name with CGI and mySQL, however when I tried to transfer my domain name there awhile back and they said they would email me my username and password, but I never received it so I don't really recommend them.

I signed up at portland.co.uk few days ago, DID receive the username and password but guess what .... it is not active. I couldn't get into my account. Was trying to send them an email and the mailer has informed me that thier box was full and therefore the email could have not been sent...

Portland (http://www.portland.co.uk)
- PHP
- mySQL
- subdomains
- good for small sites (limited monthly traffic)
- service improving

Microworld (http://www.microworld.com)
- fast and reliable
- basic (no PHP or mySQL)

Doteasy (http://www.doteasy.com)
- no experience with them

Ratings and features included in the chart.
I have used the 2nd one on the list; it offers cgi, but this host
recently added pop-ads to the required top banner in exchange
for free hosting:

(Link above is to the free domain hosts rating list. The domain in
the link is not a domain of a free host on the list.)

I too have not been able to get a site up and running with Portland. The password they sent me doesn't work and the link for a new password is broken.

I've had more luck with doteasy. They aren't the most reliable host on the net, but a one-off $35 doesn't seem such a bad deal. I've a few sites with them. Their reseller program can't count though:mad:

Host-ing.com is pretty nice. I used it to test out one of my sites before moving it to my server. They give you 50 MB space, and 10 GB of bandwidth. Ads wise they do have 1 pop under but thats not too shabby. :)

I don't recommend Portland if you have a medium-sized site. I had a modest one when I was with them, and when I exceeded 100MB/month in bandwidth, they locked my site :(

Maybe the best solution is to
1. get a domain,
2. open an account at mydomain.com,
3. open an account at f2s.com
Then you have everything.

The best place for free hosting should be "freewebspace.net".

Stinkdot.org (http://www.stinkdot.org) host domain for free, but they require a banner to be glued on the top of your page.

I've had good experiences with freeservers. They have FTP uploading, CGIs, reasonable space and domain transfer. Also they're fast and up almost everytime.

However, on december 3 they'll change their free package to a less than ideal package, without FTP and with less space. I don't recommend them anymore.

I'm going to try stinkdot or bravenet.
