Good Gosh you have a dedicated dual OC12? How much it cost a month? I think UUNET has the best backbone

Dual OC12 by itself just does not mean anything .... What really important is at what capacity the pipe (in your case, dual OC12) being used. A T3 running at 20% of its capacity will be "faster" than an OC12 running at 98% of its capacity. Another important factor is how many peering does that OC12 have and how good they are. Here, just give it a test ... VDI.net "only" has 2xT3 and 2xOC3, bu my server there is cabaple of downloading ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z (about 8MB file size) at 2200KB/s (or 17.6Mbps). Try it with your Dual OC12. I know this test does not mean anything but it at least will tell you also that "fast" NOC is really hard to measure. Bigger pipe does not mean faster network, although it's nice to be hosted on an NOC cabaple of handling that much traffic.

BTW, is this Dual OC12 lighted already? Some people claim they have OC192 but what they actually mean is that they have the infracsturucture (OC192) ready ot be turned on any time, although they just operate it at OC3 for economical reasons.

cheers,

I think a big issue is peering arrangments.

I think the Top carriers would be:

UUnet
Cable and Wireless
Sprint
Genuity

First these 4 companies own most of the backbones in the world. Second they have a global presence. Third, its almost a given to peer with these companies.

Many other companies rely on these companies.

You can go get a cogent backbone, but because of there lack of peering might have major slow downs

What about Level3? How would you rank them compared to your top 4? I've noticed that Level3 connected Noc's seem to be quick (Ie... VDI).

Also, How would you rank AT&T against those top 4 and Level3?

Thanks!

Interactive week in a recent article rated the companies as such

UUnet
Sprint
Cable and Wireless
AT&t
Genuity

I did forget At&t before, sorry

Level 3 looks very good, and seems solid.

In the US most of these companies seem very fast, it just depends on a global presence.

The 5 listed above would provide a solid global backbone

We use yipes alot which peers with Level 3 and Uunet
