kj-96 10-21-2001, 08:16 PM Wasup all!
Can somebody just set me straight, i want to setup MY own server (lol as if thats possible), but im reading stuff here & there and getting confused so can somebody set me straight.
How would i go about setting up a server, e.g. a v.cheap server or FREE (if possible), now i have been reading stuff about "sites hosting the website" but i'm not too sure, i want to have my own server running from my own room just for some friends and i.
How would i go about it?
Do i have to get a host so that they point someone to my computer when somebody requests my website?
I hope i didn't confuse you's

kb@iy-2 10-21-2001, 08:23 PM For a free dedicated server go to http://freededicatedservers.com/.
As for running from your room, lol, good luck. :stickout

kj-96 10-21-2001, 08:25 PM lol, thanks, i need all the luck i can get.

kb@iy-2 10-21-2001, 08:27 PM What I meant by that was you're never going to be able to run a server from your room. You probably want to co-locate it to a data center near you.
kj-96 10-21-2001, 08:31 PM hahahaha, just shows how confused i am.lol.

Rewdog 10-21-2001, 08:59 PM If you have a POS old computer that you don't use anymore, download freeBSD, put it on the computer, get some books from amazon.com on Servers, and have fun learning.

You got any proof that they give away free dedicated servers?
kj-96, to set you straight, dedicated servers cost a lot of money to operate. If you were to set up your own server, you would need a fast connection like a fractional T1 and you'd need webserver software, etc. A better way to make a site is purchase shared hosting from a host. If you need to move to a dedicated server, then do that later.
matrosov 10-21-2001, 11:04 PM Well it is possible to run the server from your room: assuming you have a dedicated T1 connection to your house power generator in the basement and some sort of backup rig. Other than that you'd be better off jus colocating it at the data center. Some of the data centers give you a preconfigured server with a decent control panel so you can start hosting right away.
However the thing to check for is bandwidth allotment that your data center gives you. :)
Freededicated? Is that site for real or is that a joke? They have not updated the site since 2000. Any of you used it?
Tetraboy 10-21-2001, 11:28 PM Guys, why always stop people. I think these guys are biased. But you can surely setup a server in you're house if you have a broadband connection if its just for you and you're friends. I know MANY people that do. Even people on 56k..... You just need and pentium or above and linux or FreeBSD to install on it. Then you can setup apache and other FREE programs to run you're server. If you have a computer you can leave on 24/7 and don't use and an internet connection thats always on you can have a server.... for you and you're freinds.... No need to pay hosting companies money.... But if reliabilty is important then you might need to go with a hosting company unless you got mucho money. :-D Its pretty easy to get a server running. Though I've never done one with a domain name but I think you just run bind and itll work... But use google.com and you should find all you need. And if you have a fast connection and can download linux you can get it for free and it comes with apache and all the server tools you'll need. ( I suggest you get slackware, redhat, or debian linux. ) That's all I can think of now hope it helps.
kj-96 10-22-2001, 03:12 PM Thanks for setting me straight guys :D
I'll think i'll stick around, and try to pickup some more things :D

Exactly but not if you want charge money for it :). Home server for friends and family is a great way to learn unix/NT administration with very little capital investment. But if you want to charge money for it you'd better make sure that you cover your bases. Just my $.02 :)
purplemokey 10-22-2001, 04:49 PM http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/dynamic.html?
"Instead of using free web hosting services, you can run your own web server at home on an ordinary PC. However, if you have a dial-up connection, DSL line, or cable modem, then your IP address keeps changing every time you connect. ZoneEdit.Com Dynamic DNS allows your home web server/pc to have a permanent address on the internet. You can buy a domain name from anyone, and then use ZoneEdit to keep the domain name pointing at your web server. "
Not the most stable and don't let your cable company catch you but it's a good way of learning.
kb@iy-2 10-22-2001, 05:17 PM I don't use freededicatedservers.com, I just heard about it from somewhere. I've been to the site before and it looked legitimate. As I recall kj-96 was looking for a free dedicated server, so that's why I posted the link.

According to what I heard, the ads to test for hits rakes in cash for freededicatedservers.com, and then it moves on to the next victim.
hoster 10-22-2001, 06:02 PM Just get DSL connection with a Static IP address which you can get from most DSL providers.
;)
