VIPSNET sucks! I have been hosted by them for a year now, and their server has been unavailable SO many times. Last night, their entire database system went down, and came up now...which means it was down for at least 20 hours. And of course, you can't email their support, because their email server is down...so you keep sending mail from their support form, which goes nowhere, and you never get a response! Not at all reliable, in any sense of the word, and a terrible choice for me this past year. They are CHEAP in every sense of the word, especially in what they provide.
thomas830 02-23-2004, 07:06 AM we are down because Burst disconnected our server. We have contacted them but they say the customer service does not work on weekends and the earliest we can get the server is Monday 9AM EST
One of our reseller customers were hosting the mediastrhp guy, we were not notified of the SPAM because the IP was unbranded and our our reseller DNS servers have been used.
Please read about it in another thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=143724&perpage=15&pagenumber=15
We will bring the server back online asap

Wow. I register, and find someone who's quoted me from somewhere else. That's definitely a first.
To relate my experiences with Vipsnet in more detail, since that seems to be the point of this thread:
I've been a customer of theirs for a year now. Since we signed up, our site's been down and email unavailable several times, on average one or two times a month, usually for several hours. In addition to the recent three-day episode, their services are simply unreliable. Emailing their support address, either from their support form or via direct email, doesn't work half the time...no response, and they seem to never get your emails. I sent 7 copies of one email to them over January asking them what the problem was with my site, and got no response...i can only assume their email doesn't work when their services are having issues, which is a definite problem for a support email, wouldn't you say?
When i've managed to get through to them, to be fair, they've been polite and often helpful. They did manage to wipe out my entire SQL database last year when i emailed them to ask why my password for phpmyadmin wasn't working, without notifying me that they were planning to do anything of the sort...i just got an email saying this is the problem with your password, you can't use a backslash in it.
Then i check, and my forums site is gone, no databases showing up at all. I email them, and their response is "we had to dump it, restore it from a backup".
I'm sorry, but my organisation simply can't tolerate a hosting company this unreliable and unprofessional. We've switched to hostpc.com, which has proved much more reliable and is actually MUCH cheaper. We're currently paying $25 per year for a much larger, better-featured plan than with vipsnet, and we've had no reliability issues or problems with uptime yet (it's been a few weeks, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed).
Vipsnet seemed like a great, and cheap option when i was looking into hosting for the first time, but i've come to realise that reliability is a different thing entirely, and i would have gladly paid more for that quality.
Dave.
Dchakrab 03-15-2004, 04:36 AM Incidentally, to add to my previous post, i have emailed Vipsnet 4 or 5 times so far to have my domain name information sent to me (they registered the domain for me as part of their package) so i could switch hosts and administer the domain account at GoDaddy. They haven't responded yet...suspicious? Or just convenient that they didn't get around to it, and my domain's set to expire this month?
I had to have my boss fax in a copy of her ID to get the account information from GoDaddy and make the switch, and given that my boss was in India at the time and it's my job to keep her from having to deal with these issues, she wasn't too happy (and faxing ID copies from remote locations in a third world country can often be a bit of a challenge in itself, i'd like to point out).
All in all, i began asking for the domain information in January, and didn't manage to have my domain switched till earlier this month, after several long phone conversations with GoDaddy's domain support people. Something else that didn't leave me with a very positive impression of Vipsnet.
Dave.
Dchakrab 03-25-2004, 10:29 AM To update this post:
Vipsnet just charged my boss's credit card for another year's service. After a million emails specifically telling them we were cancelling, and having to hijack my domain back from GoDaddy to get rid of their services!
Avoid them like the plague, is my advice.
Dave.
Why have you stayed with them for a year if things were so bad?
we were not notified of the SPAM because the IP was unbranded
BurstNet offer unbranded IP's that don't trace to anybody?
Dchakrab 03-25-2004, 11:33 AM Because the non-profit i work with is poor, like most non-profits, and we'd prepaid for a one-year package. It's sad, but it's a fact of life...we couldn't afford to switch to a more reliable host, even though the one we had was useless.
Nearing the end of that one-year period, we switched to hostpc.com, which has proven a much more reliable and knowledgeable hosting provider so far.
Anyway, moot point now...vipsnet's site doesn't even show anymore, so i'm assuming they just vanished into the great beyond.
Dave.

Dave, have you gotten your domain renewed yet? I just wanted to make sure you weren't knocked offline if it expires.
Joe
Dchakrab 03-31-2004, 11:26 PM Yeah, i have, actually...thanks for asking! This is why i love you guys, compared with vipsnet.
After wrangling with GoDaddy for a while, i managed to get the account information for my domain switched to my email address, so it's renewed and running.
Vipsnet, incidentally, just charged me for another year's hosting fees...am going to have to contest it with the card company, i think.
Dave.
