is it normal for httpd processes to be taking up 5% of memory? Are there any steps we can take to lower this?

great that you asked. i was just looking at my TOP and was wondering the same thing. (i'm developing my website at the moment, meaning, only 4 or 5 people know about it).

portions of my TOP:

Your figures are very small, look at these:

24872 httpd 0 0 15608 15M 14276 S 0 0.1 3.0 0:01 httpd
24874 httpd 1 0 15832 15M 14208 S 0 0.1 3.0 0:02 httpd
24875 httpd 10 0 15604 15M 14272 R 0 0.1 3.0 0:01 httpd
24876 httpd 0 0 15604 15M 14276 S 0 0.1 3.0 0:01 httpd

the amount of memory httpd takes up depends largely upon the number of modules it is using.

on high volume servers we either use a minimal httpd to server up static html and gifs or even switch to a lighter weight web server.

if you do not use certain modules, get rid of them ... you can pair down the httpd executable that way and save ram.

i am using raq3 with 512ram with cpu usage of around 0.15 and memory usage of 55% ... httpd seems to take up around 30% of my memory resources :
