View Full Version : Second Monitor

OK, so I just got an old junker computer that won't start up (the hard drive is corrupted in oh so many ways, and there's no use restoring it, because the rest of the computer sucks), so, I stole the video card off of it, and installed on my computer. Then i plugged in the monitor, and turned on my computer. Well, during startup I noticed that the monitor that the xp startup screen was on, was the monitor I just installed. So, I just went ahead into windows, and went to the device manager. It says that neither one of my video cards can start, (code 10)

I really don't know what to do here, and I was hoping that somebody could help me. As soon as I unplug the second card, everything works, but as soon as I put it back in, it seems like it takes over my nvidia card or something. I"m not sure what the problem is, so can somebody please fill me in?

Thanks :-)

Boot in safe more (hit F5 while booting), remove old drivers. Upon rebooting you should be in VGA mode. Install new drivers, reboot and you should be set.

Edit: in case I misread your post, your PC won't work with 2 video cards at the same time.

Did you go into the BIOS and make your primary monitor the first card you installed? It's probably an AGP if it's a newer computer.

OK, thank you both for the replies. I went in to bios, and sure enough, the primary video adapter was a PCI (the video card I just installed), and my nvidia is AGP. So, I switched that, and kept both monitors hooked up, and now everything is just the opposite as it was before. Now everything shows up on the right screen. But, when i go in to device manager, the nvidia is working properly, but the new card still has a code 10. So, in essence, I got rid of one of the code 10s, but still have another one.

So, does anybody have any more ideas for me, or is this just a lost cause?

Thanks

Umm, why do you have two videocards installed? I didn't realize you could do that. I run dual monitors off of one videocard. Everything runs smooth. I have a geforce 4 4600.

Because I have a factory installed card (part of the board)...I wanted two monitors, so I installed the second video card. I know you can use two, because I've done it before, but this time it just isn't working. I'm guessing that these two cards just don't want to work together.
I'm going to email nvidia and see if they have any advice.

Thanks a million

Just disable the onboard video then.

But I need the onboard video. One of the monitors is plugged in to the onboard, and one is plugged in to the other card. So, I have to have them both enabled, but I just can't quite figure it out.

Might not be able to run both.

One or both of the graphics chips isn't compatible with multiple monitors.
