I am starting to look at moving over from vps to dedicated --for disk space reasons.

So I like to know server co's that provide good/cheap backup. One that I looked at provides tape backup at $5/Gig over 10 gig, easily making the cost of the backup as much as the cost of the server itself:rolleyes:

Any recommendations?

One of the GNAX resellers on WHT was offering a 10 GB FTP backup account for $5. I know FTP backups are really easy to setup in WHM/CPanel, and I'd imagine it's not too tough to set them up in other control panels/

Come to think about it, I could do incremental backup, since most of the data does not change, and is archival. I don't know the efficiency of incremental backups, i.e. would it look into mysql tables, and figure out new rows, etc. (since mysql is what contains the bulk of my data). Can someone give me ideas. Thanks.

How much data are you looking to back up at a time?

I would also suggest that offsite backups are far better then having them there as sometimes problems do occur at the datacenters etc.

Exactly. All it takes is one clueless technician to lose your server AND your onsite backup.

If you have a fast, reliable internet connection with a static IP, you may even want to keep a third weekly or nightly backup on your own computer

ya for very important stuff is is very good to have multiple backups at several different places and to update quite often incase emergencies alot of people forget to do this then one day something goes wrong and you lose alot of information.

I received an email from a vendor about an ftp solution, which is a good idea.

As I have high speed access... so I suppose I can just purchase a DVD-writer and back things up that way. I am looking at backing up about 40-50 gig, but it is incremental.. I believe I can set up incremental backup in the WMH(?). But since it is behind a firewall, I would have to back things up myself (i.e. not automatically) which requires a good discipline (vs. ftp backup which is automated).

Is DVD-writer a good backup media, and is it reliable, or one has to look at tape backup.

DVD is a ok idea if your backing upless then 4 gigs of data at a time. Plus, if your doing it on a reoccuring basis, cost can add up at what is it, $1-$2/disk.
You would be cheaper off purchasing say, a removable HD. But then you have the problem of your server going down, and uh o. have to restore 4 gigs of data on a home broadband connection with 256kbps upload. You have then at least a day downtime.
