View Full Version : $5.50 domain registration/transfer at I power web
alanfang 02-21-2004, 01:42 PM I've seen I power web offering domain registration/transfer for $5.50. Is there a catch? They said DNS management is included. Has anyone tried it already? I'd like to know if their "DNS management" allow us to change nameservers, or it only allows change of MX, CNAME, etc. Thanks in advance.
myvalueweb.com offers domains for $4 for the first 10 domains and $8.95 after that.
alanfang 02-21-2004, 02:28 PM You mean Myvaluehost.com? Yea I've seen it. They seem like a good one but they offer new registrations only, no transferring. I'm also looking for cheap place to transfer my domains. Thanks.
Yes, its Myvaluehost...
so with ipowerweb you can transfer for $5.50? sounds cool...
do you know which registrar they are using?
alanfang 02-21-2004, 03:44 PM Mmm, I don't really know. But considering the size of their company and the price they offer, they must be very high up in the stream. I heard that the highest level paid only $1 per domain, do they? Anyway, check out their link here:

othellotech 02-21-2004, 03:59 PM my understanding is that every registrar pays $6 to NSI and *about* $0.25 to ICANN so anyone selling below 6.25 wholesale is losing money oin every domain.
even assuming all their systems run on free electricity at a charity datacentre and control panels were developed and maintained by industrious pixies who wanted nothing in return, much less than 6.75 wont leave any change after card processing/banking fees etc.
*personally* I'd never knowingly do business with an organisation that does it below cost, as I'd be concerned about their long term stability combined with the safety/access of my domain etc.
dmaven 02-21-2004, 04:04 PM These are loss leaders to lure in clients with the hope they will buy other services. With advertising PPC programs running at 4.00 - 7.00 per click this actually might work out cheaper for companies.
I do agree othellotech's stance on this topic, I would rather stick with a proven company
amusive.com 02-21-2004, 04:39 PM Exactly. When a larger company does it (ie: ipowerweb, ev1servers) it's far less suspicious... it's just a good way to get people to register. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if after, say, 11 months the price goes up to a more reasonable (and profitable) number for renewals.
When a company nobody has ever heard of starts doing it (or, say, starts selling domains for $3.99 then has a buy one get three free special)... that's when you should get suspicious ;)
Bannaz 02-22-2004, 09:44 AM Its called loss-leader marketing.
johnnyb3 02-22-2004, 03:21 PM i believe you can only host the transferred domain with ipowerweb

Pillhead 02-24-2004, 10:19 AM Yet to recieve my "confirmation email" :-/
nextdoor 02-25-2004, 01:44 AM What a scam for Myvaluehost.com
they charge $4 but then ask for $10 in start up fees
amusive.com 02-25-2004, 03:43 AM You can opt-out of hosting.
Toeki 02-25-2004, 03:52 AM I have tried myvaluehost and got 5 domains for $4 each - no other fees(that I know of)

lemel 02-25-2004, 08:17 AM who's is the registrar in both cases myvaluehost and ipowerweb?
does the whois record show their traces?
Toeki 02-25-2004, 08:32 AM myvaluehost uses Opensrs
they don't allow you to turn off the reseller info from the control panel
lemel 02-25-2004, 10:44 AM ic.. that means not good for registering domains for clients..
but my personal domains.. ok ;)
Research Names 02-25-2004, 10:35 PM Personally I find loss leaders too risky.
It looks like more and more companies are following ev1servers' tactics. Anybody know how many domains registered ev1servers during that $5 campaign?

Well I've still not had a transfer request after purchasing my domain from iweb, they gave me a username/password, it never let me into the control panel url that they supplied.
I wrote to there sales and support dept, no answer from sales, from teh support dept they said "we will give this to our senior tech", then today I got an email saying "please can we have the last four digits of your credit card".
Me is not looking tooo hopeful at this point.
homerguy99 02-26-2004, 06:06 AM I hope they are not like iregistration which have so many complains
nextdoor 02-26-2004, 06:18 PM i just went to register uy0.com
with Myvaluehost.com
but they said my cc info didnt match cause of my postal code..not to any other canadians out there..dont put a space between your postalcode...so went back to fix it..and both times after it dead linked me
so i went over to ipower...wasnt a problem..1.50 more but oh well
fwwebs 02-27-2004, 12:16 AM I've seen I power web offering domain registration/transfer for $5.50. Is there a catch? They said DNS management is included. Has anyone tried it already? I'd like to know if their "DNS management" allow us to change nameservers, or it only allows change of MX, CNAME, etc. Thanks in advance. First off, DNS management would allow you to change MX, CNAME and A records. If you were to change nameservers, you would need Ipowerweb wouldn't be hosting your DNS.
I've noticed that you've tried to contact them via email. I hosted with them for some time, and email/support ticket replies usually take 2-3 weeks for a response. Your best bet is to call them. Overall their support is very slow and not all that good, but once everything is up and running there are very few server problems.
nextdoor 02-27-2004, 04:22 AM calling them takes awhile too..i called them to varify my order since i didnt get a confimation email.
i was on hold for a good25 minutes for billing inquires

Selling domains for 5.50 I do not think they can afford to hire more staff

Note that their main business is web hosting service, which has a much higher profit margin than domain services. Domain service is but a convenience for their hosting customers, and to attract more web traffic and thus more potential customers. Say if one in ten of their domain services users choose to use their hosting, that will justify the low prices for their domain services.
nextdoor 03-04-2004, 04:20 AM they dont even have a user page to change tech and admin info
i bought a domain off ipower and valuehost. Despite value host having to manually fill my cc order which was a pain, there user interface is SOOO much better. I still havent heard back from ipower on how to change the info,as for valuehost, i got the link from the initial email they sent me and was able to change it all on my own. The damn user page for ipower ...every link you click tells you to buy a 7.95 hosting package. its useless even giving that user panel link because theres NOTHING you can change on there without being told to pay 7.95!
