View Full Version : Would You Add Dedicated Servers?

Suppose you were thinking of adding dedicated servers to your product line and was seeking opinions.
My initial thoughts:

Build up about a half dozen or so quality servers and install them in a cage at a data center.

Example 1:
Celeron 2.4 GHZ Processor
1 GB DDR Memory
Two 60 to 100 GIG IDE drives.
Use quality components throughout.
Have them all setup, installed and online before you try to rent them.

Question 1: Which operating system would you install considering the above example?
Question 2: Which would be more popular - [2] drives with RAID or [2] drives using 1 as a backup?

It seems with all the competition, you would have to offer faster servers with more hardware features to be
competitive.

Example 2:
Celeron 2.4 GHZ Processor
1 GB DDR Memory
[2] 80 GB IDE Drives with RAID 1 (mirror)
Redhat Linux Installed
100GB Monthly Data Transfer
$49.95 Setup - $99.95 per month

Question 3: Would this price be out of line?
Question 4: Would there be a demand for a server like this?
Question 5: Could you be competitive?

Please post your suggestions and opinions!
Thanks!
John

it depends on what kind of service you are willing to provide.. if it is just unmanaged, then 100GB for 99$ will not make people buy your servers (most likely). On the other side, if there is top notch service (such as close-to-100% uptime, fast support, probably managed), then I am sure people will rent the machines even with 100GB of monthly bandwidth limit..

I suggest that you build higher end machines (such as dual opterons, or something else you can't find every day) and sell them at the higher price. If people realize that you stand behind the servers, I'm sure they will get to you
good luck

m.

I didn't think I posted it here.
