rackshack.net has always amused me when it comes to offering low bandwith price. Makes me a bit scarrreed especially since we are launching our webhosting biz soon ... If we do not think ahead of time on how to plan our biz, I think I won't stay in this biz too long. I am interested to also embrace rackshack (too bad they do not accept colocation). But I have never experience their network quality/speed. If anybody has any dedicated server with rackhack, will you please pm/email me? I would really love to know how burstable is their connectivity ... the benchmark I have been using is to try download ftp://ftp.uu.net/uumap.tar.Z and see how fast the connecitivity can burst. Anybody?

cheers,

Clarification:

The above quote was pulled from a post by me on the Rackshack forum. It was listed there as PRELIMINARY, which means it is subject to change.

They both use Verio as a primary transit provider, hence the reason they are slow.

It is called "Cogent" bandwidth. It has been discussed all over these forums.

"10 MB Dedicated Port " is easy with Cogent. Run a GB backplane switch on each rack, jam 20 (40 butted up) servers in that rack. The bottom line is that you are not truelly getting 10 MBs transfer guaranteed. Imagine 150 servers all pushing 10 MB's. There would be bottlenecking. It is a numbers game at a high level. RS is good at this. Right Robert? :D

Of coure this is all a hunch. :)

Could you explain that, Jay?

Verio is not a very fast provider, they are usually shunned by professionals in the field when looking for ds3 and such quotes most people say no, verio sales people.

Yep, I have noticed that trend too. Verio has never been on the top of my list!

I got curious and tried ours...

********************************************
WorldzonePro.net
ftp> get uumap.tar.Z
local: uumap.tar.Z remote: uumap.tar.Z
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,48,96,9,147,70)
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for uumap.tar.Z (8520221 bytes).
226 Transfer complete.
8520221 bytes received in 9.68 secs (8.6e+02 Kbytes/sec)
********************************************

This is going to sound stupid coming from me... but I never learned it, never asked about it, and never was curious about it till now..

what does "8.6e+02 Kbytes/sec" mean??

what does "8.6e+02 Kbytes/sec" mean?? [/B]

That means you were able to burst to 860KBps (Kilo Bytes per second) or 6.88Mbps (Mega bits per second). It was OK/good, but I have seen people burst close to 5 times that, and that's impressive!

Paul L: Some people like verio, but it was as my offer stated a one time thing. I have a client who insisted on verio for some reason but the deal fell threw because verio is closing the NY and NJ datacenters at the end of this year most likely. But the deal was for any verio data center so I tried to see if anyone else wanted Verop bandwidth at a really cheap price.
