![]() | View Full Version : what do you use for your servers? asiammyself 02-18-2004, 09:37 PM t1 dsl etc thanks! traixanha 02-18-2004, 09:43 PM dial up..:D csparks 02-18-2004, 09:44 PM most people run out of datacenters. Datacenters usually use 10-100MBps connections, generally a few of them, and share them between servers. I run a testing server off of my home computer which is cable. I would think most coporations use t1's if they host there site in house. asiammyself 02-18-2004, 10:01 PM Originally posted by biovelocity most people run out of datacenters. You know, the ones you get in the mail and you never use. :D eddy2099 02-18-2004, 10:22 PM Hosting behind your own ISP's acccess account would not be good for your visitors because it was not made for that very purpose. Moreover, most ISP do not allow you to do so. Hosting with a datacenter would ensure you get optimum performance for your buck since there will be a dedicated team of technicans who would be on-call or on-site to monitor your servers 24/7. Their network are configured solely for hosting sites and as such would provide the fastest support with all the equipments to ensure uptime. Renting a dedicated server from a datacenter could cost anywhere from $60 to $3000 or so depending on the server specifications, bandwidth and how much managed support you require. Typically an unmanaged server would be anywhere between $99 to $199. Managed would cost more but give you additional peace of mind. I'm using pigeons.. latency is high but at least its the fastest way to send data over a long distance cheaply. You can check out pingeonsandwireless.com for more info. I am running my server from a data center off a 10Mbit connection, my development environment is running a similar setup also on a 10Mbit connection, but this is indirectly free. 10Mbit connections can provide upstream of up to 1~1.1MByte/s in practice, in theory it can stream 1.25MBytes but I never see anything more than 1.1MB/s ichris 02-19-2004, 12:43 PM Originally posted by teammobot We use the free AOL CDs 56k dial up. Well, sorta. My datacenter (50,000 sqft right now) is powered by a dual 56k connection, shotgunned. And because people love sites that are multi-homed I also have AOL and NetZero accounts. See, I spent to much building the DC, and couldn't afford the bandwidth.... I'm telling you guys: custom built cabinets made out of Titanium and Gold with Platinum accents may look absolutely gorgeous and impressive to clients - they cost a LOT! |
