I'm looking (over the next month) to possibly move to another server setup.

My site is getting busy and 2 pieces of it are heavy mysql (forum and review system as well as an ad server)

Looking for:

1. Web server
1. MySQL server

Web server - 512 megs ram is fine
MySQL - 1 Gig dual CPU

I don't need super computers, so i'm interested in Dual P3 solutions and such. I want something affordable since both servers would be ran on a hobby site.

*MUST* have Vlan or private network from mysql to web server - *ONLY* mysql traffic will go back and forth.

I would prefer RHEL 3.0 on both, but fedora would be acceptable.

Is there anyone out there doing vlan affordably? anyone out there have some older good horsepower machines sitting around that i can lease up from you?

thanks

servermatrix has VLan as a standard option. as for older hardware, I think you better email their sales directly for a custom quote.

If that's all you think you need, I'd suggest looking at one single more powerful server. A dual Xeon would likely be faster, cheaper, and less of a hassle. Just make sure you have enough RAM to keep all your db's in memory.

Go with GNAX, GNAX has dual P3 1GHz servers with VLAN.

Find a place that will give you a crossover between the two machines. Eliminate the (very small) overhead caused by the switch.

Easier to implement as not all data centers will do VLAN for you.
