Hello,
I need to register a domain for someone, and also require hosting (possibly hosting that supports PHP).
I have a had a quick look around on the web, and there are so many sites that regiester domains, I have no idea where to start!
I obviously want to keep the cost down, but also want a decent service.
Does anyone know of the best that would suit my needs?
Thanks a lot,
Edward Ludlow

I see you are using btinternet, so assume you are from the UK :)
Therefore I recommend http://www.123reg.co.uk as they're competitively price, easy and quick...

eludlow,

So far i have yet to find a domain registration service better than
http://000domains.com/ (of course ours is kewl too ;) )

Its only $13.50 per year for a domain name and they have an easy to use control panel.

You might come across sites offering such services for $35/yr  , but that's just a waste of good money. There is no point paying that much just for a domain name/yr.

I am pretty sure almost everyone on WHT feels the same way.

For domain name registration I used http://www.stargateinc.com and for a website host I am going to sign up for http://www.apixhosting.com/ as they seem to offer a very nice package at a good price.

Another UK company is http://www.ukreg.com - unfortunately I would have recommded them before, but they seem to be getting progressively worse. If you do want to use a UK based company then go with http://www.123reg.co.uk

Don't be tempted to go with a REALLY cheap company... there are a lot of cons out their. If you find what seems like a good deal post it up here first to get some opinions :)

GoDaddy (http://godaddy.com/) is very good, I always use them.

Why does it seem like the cheap domain registrars, such as GoDaddy and Stargateinc, always gotta use ASP, which probably also means they are hosting their sites with Windows NT? As a hosting company, that completely turns us off, since it is extremely important to be able to register and modify domain names at any time. We even tried to use GoDaddy a couple months ago as a trial run, and when we tried to register a domain, the site just sat there waiting eternally for the next page to load. After a few minutes of waiting, we went back to our normal place and paid the extra few dollars..

So, the moral to the story is, if you need to make frequent changes and new domain registrations, and want maximum reliability and speed, then sometimes it's worth paying an extra few dollars to register through somewhere that at least hosts on fast, reliable Unix machines. Right? Maybe it's just us..

I have 5 domains with stargateinc.com I definatley recommend them, but for some reason it told me nine-one.net was an invalid domain, so I had to register that with websurface.net which is also nice, but their control panel could be better

Do providers like GoDaddy and Stargateinc allow you to enter whatever details you want into the public whois records? I've never used either, so I'm curious.

Cheers

Yes, any registrar should let you put any info into the WHOIS you want. At least, this has been the case with all registrars we've used so far, not including GoDaddy or Stargateinc, so your mileage may vary. Just be careful with the Billing Contact, because many registrars use this to notify you about expiring, etc.
