Getting there
1. Point your web browser to http://www.godaddy.com/.

Logging into your account
2. Log into your account by clicking on the "My Account" link located just below the menubar of the webpage. If you don't have an account yet, you will have to create one.
3. Enter your login name or customer number in the entry box labelled "Login Name or Customer Number".
4. Enter your password in the "Password" entry box located below the "Login Name" entry box.
5. Click on the "LOGIN" button located below the "Password" entry box.

Choosing a domain
6. Good! Now that you have logged into your account, select the "Manage Domains" menu item from the "Domain Names" drop down menu located on the left side of the webpage.
7. Below the "Domains Names" menu, select the domain for which you will be creating nameservers. If you do not have any domains, you will have to register one. For example, awebsite.com.

Creating the first nameserver
8. In the bottom right hand corner of the webpage (you may have to scroll down), expand the "Domain Host Summary" box by clicking on the "+" icon.
9. Click on the "Click here to see details or to modify" link below to begin creating the your nameservers.
10. On the right side of the webpage, enter the host name of your first name server in the entry box labelled "Host". The most common names are "ns1" or "dns1". For example, ns1.awebsite.com or dns1.awebsite.com.
11. Just below, add the IP of the nameserver in the "IP Address" entry boxes. For example, 128.98.34.112.
12. Now create the nameserver by clicking on "Add New Host".

Creating the second nameserver
13. You will need to create at least 2 nameservers. To create a second nameserver, repeat steps 10 to 12. Common practice dictates that the second nameserver will be named "ns2" or "dns2". For example, ns2.awebsite.com or dns2.awebsite.com.
14. By convention, the last part of the ip address of the second nameserver will be incremented by 1. For example, 128.98.34.113.
15. At this point you could add additional nameservers but it is not required. To save your nameservers, click on "Save Changes".

Final thoughts
16. Excellent! You have successfully created private nameservers at GoDaddy.com! Remember that your changes may take up to 72 hours to take effect (propagate).

I bought a domain at Godaddy.com, and now I want to configure my web server for this. The only problem is, wouldn't I only have 1 IP address for my server? How do I register 2 name servers if I only have 1 IP Address?

You can alias your eth0 to respond to multiple ip addresses. You need 2 IP addresses to register 2 nameservers :)

Ok, here comes the newb talk again....

How do I alias my EC for 2 IP addresses?

If you're on a cPanel server (and have root), simply use the add an IP function and it will do everything for you.

Otherwise something like this on the shell will do the trick:

/sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.2.2

:)

Ok... more newb talk...

What is a shell? Isn't there anyway to do this through software on Windows 2000 Server (What I'm running)?

And if there isn't, how would I enter that in my shell?

Sorry. I thought you were talking about Linux. I'm not totally up on my windows, but I think you have to alias
your ethernet card in the network settings and then add the IPs to Microsoft's dns or bind.

Best to post your question in one of the main forums like Domain Names Discussion.

Godaddy has slightly changed. After you log in, click on the yellow button labelled "Manage My Domain Names" just under the silver and gray menu bars at the top of the left side bar. This should be step 5b.

kind off topic i guess. but i was just curious on why some registrars take a long time to update their name servers (pointing to another namserver for example, another host with cpanel). i have my domain through mydomain.com btw. I know there are lots of cheaper alternatives but since i've been with them for quiet awhile, so i stayed:)

1. Not sure why some registrars take longer than others.

2. Do a search on WHT.

Can you see your site? What's the URL? How long again did you submit to search engines and how long ago did you post it?

I tried godaddy and it was to difficult for me to use as a beginner. Its cheap enough but I think it comes with alot of advertising you just don't want.

I have a question, do you need to run a nameserver yourself, or can yuo use the existing nameserver of your host and rename it with this tool?

april, you can get a managed account instead that do the technical stuff for you :)

idologic_aw

You can do either. You can even use GoDaddy's nameservers.

if you only have 1 IP (say at home) how could you do this?

I tried to just put the same for both, and got htis message:
Error: The IP address you have attempted to use (**) during the registration of your name server is already in use by another name server. Please choose another IP address to associate with your name server.

raybdbomb, I'm afraid you cannot.. thats for trying to force secondary nameservers that are on another physical location.. however you should be able to retrieve more ips for the same server

Okay, I followed the directions and got two error messages from Godaddy. Here's one:

----------------------------------------
The registration of NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM has FAILED.
The IP you requested for this name server was:
207.XX.XX.XX
Error: (551) Parent domain status does not allow for operation;
Please contact GoDaddy.com for assistance.
http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/support.asp
---------------------------------------

One can check internic to determine that the ip number is free. What else must I do??

My new host says: There is no match for that nameserver in the Internic database, so it seems to be a problem on GoDaddy's end. There should be no reason why you cannot register that nameserver:

Have you contacted godaddys support?

Lynx

I did a search on the web (that's how I found this post, in fact).
I was successfully able to assign nameservers -- after I unlocked the domain.
My understanding was that a locked domain just prevented transfer of the domain to another registrar. It also prevents setting up nameservers (and possibly doing anything).

Hope this helps someone.

Is it normal for a nameserver that i have created to be available on a Whois lookup, but not reachable via ping?

AbsolutelyFreeWeb
03-13-2005, 09:31 AM
datruesurfer, its two completely different things. whois looks up the registration from a database, ping asks for reply from a server to see if it is alive (and the server may choose to answer or not)

Sorry, newbie question.
I have created my nameservers up to step 15 of the excellent tutorial.
Do I now go to the name servers summary, and change to my new domain. At the moment they point to Godaddy parkserver, do I change using the custom name servers option, and what format should I use ns1.mydomain.com?

Thanks in advance

If you register with Godaddy, READ EACH STEP or you will miss the link in small type to change nameservers! Good luck.

Does anything need to be done to the nameservers of the domain you just created as a custom nameserver? Does it need to be pointed to the new nameservers, parked at Godaddy, etc.? Thanks.

I have a situation here. Lets say i have a domain that is registered under GoDaddy, i wonder if its possible to use it to create name server but directed to another domain name?

Lets say.

Daddy.com = GoDaddy registered
Nom.com = Enom registered

under Daddy.com account i'll create name server but i'll fill in ns1.Nom.com to 122.0.0.1

Will it work? Or must it be Daddy.com? I wonder if anyone have ever tried this before.

Are you using a private nameserver (ie: your own)? If so, have you designated the domain as a NS with your registrar?

That is usually the problem.

Nobody every answered this guys question and I would like to no the answer having just registered a domain name as a nameserver at godaddy.

You can register the domain as a nameserver but leave the domain its self still pointing to godaddys nameservers does this then have to be changed to point to the new nameserver you just created, Pointing to itself infact?

I have a domain example.com registered with godaddy.
I also have two web host account from two different companies which are company 1 and company 2.

I am trying to make example.com point to company 1 nameserver and create another sub domain sample.example.com to point to company 2 nameserver.

My question now is do I park my domain with godaddy and make use of the total dns control to set these setting which I need or what do I do if not? I am stuck at this for 2 weeks already

I'm a newbie.
I just bought a new dedicated server which running windows server 2008 r2 and have an ip for example 128.98.34.112. I bought a domain xyz.com without hosting from godaddy.com and i want to host it to my new server. in godaddy.com i already follow this steps. i also have installed plesk in my new server and create a domain with the name xyz.com and set the A record for xyz.com to 128.98.34.112, and set the NS record to ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com. But until now i still can not open the xyz.com from browser. Whats wrong? Do I need to install active directory to host a domain? thanks
