View Full Version : Where to find lots of bandwidth for cheap?

Hello,

I am about to start a shoutcast server and I need a dedicated server. Shoutcast servers don't require much speed, but they use a ton of bandwidth. So I am looking for a slow box with alot of BW for a reasonable price. Can anyone recommend something?

Also, who offers the unmetered 10mbps conncetions or something like 15 or 20 or 100mbps unmetered port? Thanks, Kyle

http://www.superbservers.net/ Does 100Mbit unmetered, but it'll cost you a decent penny each month ;)

As for cheap servers with a decent amount of bandwidth. Nocster has lower comps w/ a TB of traffic for pretty cheap. I think ~$60 a month for a 800Mhz p3 and TB of traffic. There's also ServerMatrix and managed, but both of those will cost you a couple bucks more (depending on if you pay for setup in servermatrix's case).

EDIT - hmm, actually, Would a VPS work? Hiyacorp (a nocster reseller) as a VPS w/ 10Mbit unmetered for $60 a month. It doesn't have a major load of space (3 GB or so), but assuming you aren't storing hte music on the server it self, it could be well worth it.

Cogent has the cheapest bandwidth on the planet so your best bet is to get a 100meg circuit in carrier neutral datacneter

Indeed; HE offers 2500 for a 100mb unmetered port with a full rack .
You might also want to look at wcg (similar pricing) .

Hello,

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I would love to get a rack at first and colo somewhere, but I am not quite ready for this yet. I want to start on a dedicated server and then move up.

Francisco, a VPS would work in this case. Are you on this plan or do you know anything about this company?

Does anyone else know of any VPS with lots of BW and little space? Thanks, Kyle

Your looking for an unmetered VPS or just a VPS with a lot of bandwith (metered data transfer) a little space?

I perfer an unmetered, but metered will work as long as it it alot.

Well in that case I would ask various VPS providers for custom quotes.

Note : jvds offers unmetered VPSs http://www.jvds.com/35unmetered.php

That 10mbit VDS deal at $60 will not work for streaming. If you have lets say 100 listeners at 128kbit you *need* a steady 12.8mbit upstream. And you may have a 15mbit port but if you can't max it out during your peaks the whole shoutcast stream just collapses and starts skipping until part of the listeners run away.

Go with a host who gives you a dedicated port which you can max out without getting packet loss. Because even with a 12.8mbit pipe maxed out completely with 100 listeners at 128kbit, you can NOT stream to 101 listeners. It's not data.

http://vibehosting.com have some pretty good deals on dedicated 10mbit+ servers at $39/mbit, check them out.

I haven't done any business with Hiya, but i've talked to their sales. Fred's a really nice and easy to talk to :)

If I didn't get a better offer else where, I woulda gone with them for sure.

Hey don't get me wrong, it's a very good deal, but it will *NOT* work for shoutcast streaming where maxing out the line is a very big no-no, unlike with file transfer.

Hehe :)

I never tried to prove to him that it would work, I don't run a shoutcast (yet), so I don't know how well everything works.

One option you COULD do, is get 2 of those setups, and just relay between them (I think relay is the right word. Doesn't relay help spread the load over two or more servers?).

Why not fill us in on what kinda quality you wanna have each transfer at? How many listeners you aiming for?

If you supply this, then we all can widdle the list down a lot ;)

You can try to contact http://www.egihosting.com they are located at Hurricane Electric, Fremont. I believe they are specialized in streaming and you should be able to get some very decent bandwidth prices.

What you need to do with HE, you have to buy in huge amounts, then you can get a great deal, if not it's expensive as heck.
