Well, I finally installed a copy of Windows XP Professional on a spare machine and let me tell you, I am pretty impressed. This is a pretty slick interface. I haven't put it through its full test yet, but it seems real nice.

Well, I like the fact that it looks/works a lot smoother. However, it has a lot of bugs (one I noticed was it's file managing) that need to be fixed. Other than that, it was pretty much like Windows2000. I'm very happy with Windows2000 and I'm not sure if I want to change to WindowsXP anytime soon.

I agree it sounds like holding off isn't a bad idea unless you don't mind reformatting if something goes wrong. I know one person that has been running XP (beta I suppose) for months already and loves it, but I know 4 that have had nothing but problems and can't run anything. I too have loved Windows 2k pro, so I'm in no hurry. Sounds like waiting for Windows XP SP-1 will be a good idea. :D

Advice to listeners, make darn sure your hardware drivers are available for Win XP. It's not Microsoft's fault if they aren't available yet, but it's sure worth putting off the upgrade until you can get them.

Absolutely! This is why I am testing it out on a non-production machine. But, it has many more features than Win2K Pro (What we use exclusively in the office). Once all the kinks are out, I can see how this will be the standard OS (Microsoft based).

What's it got going on? [asking seriously] All I've heard is that it's Win2k with different colors. If it's got some cool features I might consider trying it out sooner as well.

From what i've heard, the hassles and limitations they've put into the OS is enough to keep many away from it. I haven't bothered to consider it since hearing these issues. I guess it takes a sort of computer fingerprint to prevent licensing issues, if you change a NIC card, modem or other hardware, XP may fail to work. It's still too early to tell, but i'm waiting to see what that's all about.

I've been using WinXP since RC1 came out in late July. And its worked beautifully on this piece of junk computer I have here.

This computer is 333mhz, 96mb ram, and with Win98 I was always running around 80% CPU usage - and couldn't use Photoshop 6 for more than 10 minutes - or it would freezing and I would have to reboot. And now that I'm using WinXP, I barely break over 30% CPU usage -- with PhotoShop 6 running -- runs smoothly without and quirks or anything like that.

I can imagine what it will be like on a faster machine..

With the activation thing...

You would have to redo the activation thing if you still a NIC card.. Its a major upgrade that you would have to redo the activation process again. I installed a NIC card a couple weeks ago, and I didn't have to do anything.

Major, I mean, and new motherboard, a new cpu, a new hard drive, a new video card - those types of things that would identify your computer as something else. A NIC card wouldn't do it... :)

I normally do a m/board, cpu and gfx card upgrade every 12 - 18 months, with new hdd's added along the way (and I also burn through modems at an incredible rate, lol), and having to reinstate product activation, call MS or whatever puts me off WinXP... especially when I love Win2K.

If you have Win2K, you already have 99% of what XP promises, and you don't have Product DeActivation or Passport to deal with.

But oh so wrong.
XP is MUCH more stable than win2k and is superior to it in any way.

Hmmmm... Win2K has two years of history (and two service packs) already, and XP has not been officially released yet at the retail level.

How can you substantiate your asssertion that XP is much more stable?

Because I know a guy who is part of the development team (he does security) so that's why.
Does that answer your question?

I can say that Windows XP is the BEST windows version yet and you all should upgrade.

Understand this; the comment about win2k being the same or even better than XP sounds the same to me as the people that are still claiming that win98 is better than win2k.

Yeah right...

I have absolutely no stability issues with Win2k - it will run anything I throw at it.

You seem to like criticising me - fine, do it if you have to, but can you elaborate on where XP is better 2k, instead of "in any way"?

Calm down please,
I'm not criticising you but I'm just telling you what I KNOW and what I experience every day.

All I can say is that you should give it a try and you would know what I mean. Since you are not experiencing any problem with win2k I would suggest to leave your money in your pocket.
Remember that win2k still has old NT code and the bugs/security problems that came with it.

Windows XP is the way to go for all of you people. This time it is really true. I don't own any Microsoft shares btw ;-)

TRY IT!

I heard XP dumped java support. Is that true?

Man, there's a lot of sites I use java applets on. I would'nt want to "up" grade to this if thats the case.

Hi,
I've used Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Out of the 3, I found Windows 2000 to be faster than XP. However, if your someone who looks for ultimate customization in your computer, you better go for XP. Im using XP at home, and I think im going to install 2000 again.

Hope this helps
Franz

i just firgured out was you are using 80% cpu with win 98 this was because you must have installed some crap software which registered some buggy dlls in internet explorer. which case system to always run at 80% cpu usage.

one of such crap software is top text. which will spoil the sytem. there must be many

cheers win98 works ok with my p133 and 128mb ram. (test system gone to crap last month)

cheerssssssssssssss

True. However when you visit a site that requires Java the browser (IE 6) prompts you to downlaod the JVM (java virtual machine), which takes a few minutes on broadband and I guess under an hour on modem.

Nope, I don't download crap software... :)
Most of my stuff is major releases... Adobe, Macromedia, ICQ, etc

I don't download hole in the wall software programs...

And certainly not Top Text that's for sure... I'm not fond of programs that take over my computer, thank you...

It use to run at 80% because its been a piece of $hit since the the beginning.... I've had to replace everything at least twice on this whole machine -- except the case. Gateway makes crappy computers...

BestBuy has some interesting promotion if you buy XP (seems to be about $200 home version full). All of this you have to buy but they have rebates that make it free...

256MB PC133 Memory
D-Link Cable/DSL Router
Music CD (any)
Rio One MP3 Player

Hmmm... well...
