I'm having a problem fitting a gigabit adapter in a 1u server. Just can't get everything to seat properly. This is a Netgear GA302T and an Intel S815EBM1 motherboard.
It would work if I could remove the two extra PCI connectors from the motherboard. Is that possible?
Do I need to get a special nic designed for 1u servers?
Thanks

do you have a pci riser card that makes the card go in the right direction (horizontal instead of vertical)?

Yes. Actually I got the thing in, finally, and it appears to work. The thing that doesn't seem right is that part of the card touches one of the extra PCI slots below it.
Here's a picture of the card, only mine looks different.

Mine has another black piece that looks like lots of spikes sticking up that covers the large black square shape toward the right side in the photo. That piece makes the card just wide enough so that when mounted horizontally on the riser, the black spikes press down against one of the other PCI slots.
Should I worry about that?
There's an Intel card that's about 4mm narrower that probably would fit better:

As long as it is plastic touching and not metal and the card is working you should be fine. As long as it doesn't cause an airflow problem.

if its touching the plastic on the PCI, it isnt a very big deal. If it is IN it, that is a different story.
