Hi Folks,

As I was surfing the net looking for information on the various flavors of servers offered, I came upon this article.

http://www.zeus.com/news/articles/001004-001/

With Zeus being so powerful why do you think it is not offered on more dedicated platforms? I guess one reason is that Apache is FREE!

Quite frankly I think Zeus is awesome... But the main problem is apart from the speed, Linux/Apache is free and serves pages relatively quickly anyway, and Zeus doesn't do much more than the ordinary Linux/Apache combo can do (in terms of other features e.g. CGI, PHP, etc.). Price will always be a consideration when you have free software available elsewhere that does the same type of function reasonably well.

There was also an issue raised about Zeus not handling certain very common directives in Apache - revolved around 401 error documents and certain AuthType commands in .htaccess files, as I recall. If it supported more Apache-like functions (and was a whole lot cheaper), it might find a better acceptance.

diyoha,

He is referring to Apache, also known as httpd.

I personally like Apache better too.

Actually, Vincent, JTY said

thttpd

Now, is this some modified kind of Apache I've never heard of, or is that just a typo? :) (and if it's the former, what does the t stand for? Terrible? Terrifyingly-fast? ?!)

Hello!

thttpd isn't a modified version of Apache
More info about thttpd can be found at http://www.acme.com/software/thttpd/

We actually used thttpd a while back for a particular client in the UK, the customer had a graphics server and an html/database server. The graphics server we used thttpd on, because its extremly light weight, and while it doesn't support stuff like PHP, it is extremly fast on stuff like graphics...a good application in this case.

thttpd is a lightweight http server... and you are right.
for service static content, it is really nice, but if you wish to offer php, etc it will not work. (Apache's strenght)

It helps to remember that open source software enjoys and offers tremendous benefits over commercially developed programs. It can draw on the talents of millions of users. Advancements, new features, patches and fixes, are all developed and deployed much faster. Generally, an announcement and a link on a web site is all it takes, and the announcement is optional.

Only open source can offer all that, along with a very attractive price, none.

Linux has that advantage over Unix and Apache has it over Zeus.
